All three models come in at the pointy end of Sony's existing 4k projector lineup, with the VPL-VW590 ($11,990 RRP) replacing the VPL-570ES, the new VPL-VW790 ($22,999 RRP) replacing the outgoing VPL-760ES, and a new flagship model, the VPL-GTZ380 laser projector (no pricing as yet, but rumoured to be USD $80,000).

Sony has led the 4K home cinema projector market with our native 4K SXRD projectors for nearly a decade, and we're thrilled to announce a new range of powerhouse models for our customers and CI dealers. 

While the official press release is light on technical information, more will be revealed at a virtual launch in Australia later today. 

The VPL-VW590ES and VPL-VW790ES are said to feature an “incredibly clear HDR experience by implementing new picture processor “X1™ for projector” based on technology used for Sony's best-in-class TVs.” The new X1 projector chip's processing power also means “more detailed analysis is performed and HDR enhancement power has become stronger compared to previous models.”, according to the press release.

Sony says this new HDR feature analyses each scene “to deliver the best contrast performance when viewing HDR content, making the bright scenes brighter and the dark scenes darker.” A new Digital Focus Optimiser is also said to improve focus level by compensating optical degradation of the lens for “corner to corner clarity”.

Both the VPL-VW590 and VPL-VW790 are available this month.

Sony's new flagship 4K professional SXRD laser projector, the VPL-GTZ380 is said to “deliver overwhelming image expression and HDR performance with its high contrast, brightness and wide colour gamut in a compact body size (51kg)”. Sony claims this model is capable of 10,000 lumens and able to deliver a reported 500 nits on a 4m screen.

It also utilises Sony's new X1 chip. It incorporates a newly-developed 0.74” native 4K SXRD panel with improved light stability and a new laser light source using a red laser diode in addition to the two different-wavelength blue laser diodes. Sony says, “this enables the model to achieve an impressive 10,000 lumens and a wide colour gamut of 100% DCI-P3 without any loss of brightness.”

The VPL-GTZ380 is expected to land in Australia in January 2021.
