REL HT1508 PREDATOR SUBWOOFER TO LAND DOWN UNDER

Subwoofer experts, REL, have announced its all-new HT/1508 Predator 15” Subwoofer complete with 3-inches of excursion, powered by an 850-watt amplifier and designed to be a compact powerhouse at a reasonable price.

The REL engineering team created the all-new 15-inch driver and like all REL driver designs, their focus is on speed and articulation, not just boom.

Where traditional RELs are asked to be fantastic all ‘rounders, the HT (Home Theater) range is to focus on one task (theatre bass) and do it perfectly.

When designing for theatre, the company begin at the input and worked outward. Predator's input filters and crossovers are optimised for high output theatre applications and gently correct for box/driver interactions resulting in output that extends exceptionally low.

The 850-watt amplifier is a powerhouse in the true tradition of REL, with massive power supplies and reserves of current for when a particularly explosive special effect appears onscreen.

John Hunter, REL owner, told StereoNET:

We designed an all-new 15in driver with 3in of stroke fore-and-aft but, as with all REL driver designs, our focus is on speed and articulation, not just boom. A compact yet powerful 850W amplifier provides all the power necessary to shake walls and rattle cabinets.

Where many competitors offer a 12-inch or 13-inch driver, REL supplies a 15-incher. Why? Well, REL says:

Because our testing revealed that the 15in would deliver the necessary performance but do so with greater ease and more headroom.

The REL HT/1508 Predator is designed to deliver near reference levels of output and deep, room-filling bass at a price that remains affordable, making this a product that provides exceptional value.

The sealed design features a forward firing driver, and the cabinet utilises internal bracing and a 12mm-thick glass top plate. With feet that double as stacking rails, multiple HT/1508 subwoofers can be stacked, in true REL style.

The REL HT/1508 Predator will be available later this year and sell for $2,899 RRP.

    applause awards

Each time StereoNET reviews a product, it is considered for an Applause Award. Winning one marks it out as a design of great quality and distinction – a special product in its class, on the grounds of either performance, value for money, or usually both.

Applause Awards are personally issued by StereoNET’s global Editor-in-Chief, David Price – who has over three decades of experience reviewing hi-fi products at the highest level – after consulting with our senior editorial team. They are not automatically given with all reviews, nor can manufacturers purchase them.

The StereoNET editorial team includes some of the world’s most experienced and respected hi-fi journalists with a vast wealth of knowledge. Some have edited popular English language hi-fi magazines, and others have been senior contributors to famous audio journals stretching back to the late 1970s. And we also employ professional IT and home theatre specialists who work at the cutting edge of today’s technology.

We believe that no other online hi-fi and home cinema resource offers such expert knowledge, so when StereoNET gives an Applause Award, it is a trustworthy hallmark of quality. Receiving such an award is the prerequisite to becoming eligible for our annual Product of the Year awards, awarded only to the finest designs in their respective categories. Buyers of hi-fi, home cinema, and headphones can be sure that a StereoNET Applause Award winner is worthy of your most serious attention.
