In order to avoid multiple reports of a spam message the defacto standard is to reply to the spam post with a 'reported' message. These reported messages may not always be cleaned up after the spammer has been obliterated so my suggestion is that rather than posting a 'reported' message after notifying the moderators, we have an official spam notified thread in this section. When a spam is reported the reportee posts here and everyone checks here before reporting a spammer.
When reporting, state the spammers name and link to the offending post.
This way the forum will not get clogged up with random and seemingly inappropriate reported messages and the mods don't get burried under a brazillion reports.

either that or program the report button to be disabled after a post has been reported and will become active again if the moderator decides the post is fine.

That'd take care of that particular spammage but on several occasions we see a spammer go rampant and post numerous times.

ok, slight modification, it'll disable the report button for all that users posts.

I think what happens now is probably OK, as long as the username of the spammer is shown in the post saying it has been reported.
That way when the spam post is deleted, but others reporting it are left, it's clear what they related to.

Sorry but that sounds really cumbersome. I reckon you're doing a good deed just hitting the REPORT button. A nicer one posting REPORTED. All this Cross referencing and creating links and checking if your link is the same as my link just isn't going to happen IMO.
As it stands its not such an issue is it? The odd wayward REPORTED post isn't that much of a problem? Perhaps easier would be instead of just saying reported we could say:

Yes, I agree. It is far too difficult to look at a thread to determine if a spammer has been reported already. What was I thinking.

Whichever way works for you, but please identify clearly when we have a spammer on the loose. Sometimes the user gets deleted, but the garbage remains behind so it's always good to advise of their user ID (hover over their username, and grab the number from "showuser=???")

If it's a spambot it's better at keeping on topic than I am...
