My mother-in-law inherited a Sony dst-hd100a hd stb without a remote control. Any suggestions for a CHEAP universal remote replacement that will do basic commands?

Not Cheap - by my Harmony 785 does a good job and it's database has the dst100a ... perhaps the 525? it can be found cheap if you look.
Buy a Sony RM-AX1400 from the US Ebay site for US$15, then visit remotecentral and download the file for that device.
