im not sure either.. depends on how much it would cost to add it to the machine.. may be because more than 99% of people dont use sacd may be one reason but not needing to and cost may be the biggie.

Could be... even the $2500 sony bluray player doesnt support SACD <- which is a bit of a worry.. none of the current sony lineup support it (and i'd have thaught they would out of anyone!).. so either its being left to dedicated players (maybe not such a bad thing), or its the end of the road for it.

Oppo? IIRC that will have SACD support (over HDMI even).. The other one would be a Denon (which is not only delayed, way overpriced, but free in the USA if you purchase a Denon product)

From an interview with a Sony UK rep, the reason that they dont have SACD playback is that SACD needs a completely different clocked circuits which mean doubling up on many components (or very complex firmware). This dramatically raises the BOM price and even more on retail. They say its better for both Sony engineering and the consumer to have separate devices. Note that they use many of the SACD developed technologies in the blu-ray players. (or maybe they are just positioning themselves technologically to push for Blu-ray based audio;-).

Hmm seams reasonable enough... tho theyve still dropped it from their dvd player range :-) so I think your last comment might be the real reason!

just wondering how good it would be anyway.. the machine has to play bluray, dvd, cds already... maybe a designated sacd player or a cd player with sacd built in may be the way to do.. i know a machine that does it all would be good for price and space but doesnt alwasy work i guess.

How many people play SACD's anyway? Very few.
This alone would explain the reason.

I am one of the few.
I am one of the fewer who has a universal player.
As has been previously mentioned, I think they are trying to push people toward Blu-ray for hi res music. One less platform to support and all that. The purist in me doesn't agree with it though, as I think they will try and put some sort of video content on each disk and like DVD Audio they would probably do it in such a way that you need to use a monitor to nativgate the disc - which was something I hated about DVD-A.

Yer - know what you mean, the CD nature of SACD is nice - put it in, press play, sit back and enjoy..
DVD-A was more put it in, get dissapointed it didnt start playing, fire up the display, change to the right input, find the damn remote and then your away.

I found most DVDAs will play automatically (at least in my Marantz) if you push "play" when inserting them.
But I agree the display navigation is a pain especially if you use a projector!
