Sold my combo drive and movies..

After watching a couple of movies @ 60hz on a 50hz TV i just couldnt put up with the pulldown anymore...probably due to years of fiddling with the HTPC to eliminate all microstutters and getting perfectly fluid playback of upscaled dvds.. the pulldown just ruined it for me sad.gif

I'll get back into it once I get a 24p capable display, but until then, its adios!

Cheers,
Bitey

i can understand that.. kind a pointless having bluray player if you dont have a full high def set that accepts 24hz.. wouldn`t it not have been worth it to just store your gear until you do get a new set.. once you see bluray in full high def glory you wont go back.
Mr.Bitey
Thaught about it, but the price of the bluray roms is coming down so im better off selling, then re-buying when I eventually get a 24p set.. I could see all the resolution (my display can do 1920x1080) but the motion was just too annoying!..

Treblid - if my display was 24p (or any variation) it would have been fine! just couldnt handle it..

Lyle - thats what I figure with upscaled dvd and HDTV - ill just run with that and continue to enjoy that.. HTPC does a pretty good job of upscaling!.. all the 720p stuff from the US (HDTV) looks good too, so im happy smile.gif but it was still worth checking out the HD formats..

Most people probably wouldnt notice / be bothered by 24p on 60i....

I'm waiting for my free money to upgrade my old HTPC (AGP and Northwood) to BD playback with PureVideo/VDPAU (for region A playback)... I shouldn't bother then? All those fancy video acronyms do nothing for you?

My htpc is prescott / agp - but still did blus ok (pulldown issues aside!).. 3850 in agp is easy good enough for blues/mkvs

EDIT: tho it was a real OS, not that gimmicky text based thing you run ;-)

momaw
Thats what you get when you use whitevan panels ninja.gif
Mr.Bitey
:-o Momaw <- said slowly! i am shocked! (literally if it was a kogapoo!)

You know i live in the van, so of course ive got some WVE panels setup!

Just theyre 29p - and the font on the 9 looks like a 4, and the p is an I thats been tampered with... god only knows where 29i is a standard - I guess its even below par for the US/Japan! LOL ah well... no worse than watching 50hz material on a 60hz panel, or 60hz stuff on a 50hz display, or 24p stuff on a 60i display blink.gif

With the situation your in Bitey ;Ide look at it as a good excuse to buy an edge and convert that 60p ; a new tv looks good though smile.gif
Mr.Bitey
Nah my display can only do 50/60i - so still wouldnt help my pulldown problem smile.gif and im happy with the HTPC scaling..

Probably making the decision a little easier was also my amp is 5.1, no hdmi, DTS/DD5.1 (not truehd etc) so I rekon i'll just be happy with my old-school setup and when the HT refresh (you listening Mr. Rudd??) comes in in a few more years will get back in the 24p game

Bitey

well i guess the one advantage in coming back in a few years is that the range of bluray movies will be much greater and the prices(hopefully) will have come down some. as long as you dont give up on dvd and go back to beta all is ok.
Mr.Bitey
Ive still got my laserdisc player hooked up! - forget beta ;-).. and a hand draw stick figure on the corners of a thick pad of paper - luxury!

Ahh they were the days... with all these horrid compression artifacts on the first dvds and the beuty of the LD in comparason.. my first dvd player (a laptop with a dvd rom) that i had to hack the region coding by hand to play my imported dvds.... ahhh... thank friggen christ for decent mpeg compressors, anydvd and $27 dvd drives now! LOL

I was hoping those new PCI-e cards with bigger numbers will help.... Timing is everything, you just dent my desire to help out my local B&M computer store.

laugh.gif It's not gimmicky, just fully configurable...

BTW, refrain from adopting download on demand and flash, ok?

Bitey,
you have made your decision and seem satisfied with it. You must be quite sensitive to judder.

However for me, there is no way I would abandon my Blu-ray setup.

Using analogue out from my HTPC, the multichannel sound is -- I find -- often a definite step up over Dolby Digital through an optical or coax setup. And of course it is at the correct speed and pitch, not sped up 4% like most PAL DVDs!

I find the step up in resolution, and colour, from DVD to Blu-ray/HD-DVD remarkable. The introduction of 3:2 judder -- for me-- is a small price to pay, in comparison wth the big improvements in these other elements of picture goodness. Most of the time I am not conscious of the judder.

I have a Blu-ray of Amadeus and the richness of the colour and the detail in the picture are outstanding. The last time I saw that movie with comparable brilliance would have been in 1984, at the cinema ...

My next TV display will be 24p capable and I will enjoy the smoother movement, but until then I will be quite content with 60i.

Cheers,

sad.gif I know.... i just cant handle it at all... i have 0 tolerance for it unfortunatly and anytime i see it, i have to grab the remote/mouse and start to fiddle! tho with bluray i know nothing more can be done.. its a shame but thats how its played out for me sad.gif

Not all bad tho, basically took one for the team $ wise, but sold the bluray drive and movies and got a 1TB drive, that'll get more use.

Treblid - although i do bag linsux quite a bit, i do have respect for it :-) i almost thaught about putting it on my server when i rebuilt it the other night (with mssux server 2003) but couldnt be arsed in the end! LOL

I'm seeing it at 24Fs. The stepping is really fine, but it there none the less, so I appreciate where Bitey is coming from.

Well I would prefer this to the 4% speedup @ 50Hz every day of the week!
