Full Version: Fiddling With Settings During Movie Playback?

I'm wondering who among forumites here plays with the settings of their player... scaler... projector.... while the film is playing?

I know that I do.... and it will bring cries of stop that.... from my nephews or my partner.... if I do it enough times.... they know I'll play a bit at the start.... but they'll sometimes object if I do it at other moments...

Usually it's just to see if I am getting 24p or whatever through... the display to see how long there is left of the film.... etc....

Anyone else like to fiddle with the remote during a film?

There was a time when things were simpler and all one needed to do was change the volume..........but now there are so many options and settings that I have become accustom to check these at the start of the movie:

Make sure the right audio track is selected
Check whether DRC is engaged or not
Check what Audyssey setting is used.............it's a pain in the a$$ that the only way to use DRC on DTS-HDMA tracks is to use Dynamic Volume
Turn the sub on/off depending on viewing preference or time

Misses rolleyes.gif when the various menu screens start popping up as I fiddle away

Made one change for my own case but otherwise also guilty as charged.

I'm often one to have a look at how long the film has left, whereas otherwise, mainly tend to get away with the tech stuff at the start (unless i'm interested in following the bit-rate for example).

I think 'fiddling' is really just a fetish myself ....as many violinist will testify.

Look what that pyromaniac Nero did when Rome burned.

I tend to look at the to go time and that I have the right audio selected, but other than that I don't tend to fiddle too much. I guess I play with the volume a little depending on the movie and who is watching with me.

Yep, must admit I like to fiddle blush.gif

But I never fiddle if the Mrs is watching, or even worse if we have guests, that I have learnt, is considered rude

But I do relish those nights alone when I can spend several hours fiddling

But seriously, if I am watching with others, I have my system all set up with presets and such so I can make a few quick adjustments (based on movie type, light conditions, sound format) at the very start of the movie and then put the remote out of reach and away from temptation !

Nasal Delivery? wink.gif

Fiddle a bit at the start of the movie, check for audio etc.
Might check the "To Go" time after about an hour and a half to see if it's worth pausing for a drink, pit stop etc

I like to fiddle - particularly if a movie is boring - maybe check to see if HD audio is on. Once or twice I've found a disc has defaulted to DD 5.1 instead of TrueHD. For my trouble all I've got is a groan from my other half for improving the sound...

One usually gets a comment like "Why do you always have to fiddle? Why are you never happy. I can't hear any difference".

Looks like I'm an exception, once the movie is loaded all I do is select play. The only thing I may do is adjust volume at the beginning after I hear the first lot of dialogue.

A lot of disks don't default to the best sound codec, and if one forgets, one needs (!!) to do something about it. biggrin.gif laugh.gif

That's not so much a fiddle as an adjustment though. Mind you some people can take so long to make the ajustment that there's every reason to suspect that a fiddle was their primary intention.

This really sounds like it is getting into Al Bundy territory unsure.gif

Of course there are some movies, such as >>>>> (name removed for censorship reasons)

in which you are almost compelled to fiddle ohmy.gif

Also guilty. Also get berated by the wife for doing so.

quite often we play 360 in the arvo when theres a bit of ambient light so the PJ is switched to Dynamic so we can WTF we're doing...
I usually forget to set it back to the saved calibrated settings when we watch a movie the next time so when i do change it, it goes all dark and of course i get howls/whines and growls from the mrs about it being too dark and she totally ignores my reasoning of "give it a few secs til your eyes adjust and it will look perfect" etc
MarkTecher
Company pending, I will try and get the tweaking done prior to starting the film. Of course if the film is boring, there is always the remotes smile.gif

Dare i suggest that if you constantly have to check then it must be hard to tell the difference....................
