Full Version: Freeview In Canberra. Any Improvement To What We Have?

hi all
was just curious about the much-promoted Freeview.

From looking at their website it appears to be exactly what we already get in Canberra!

Looks like we won't get the channel 10 sports channel

And I guess we continue to live with substandard programming, audio and video on 7, 9 and 10? (compared to Sydney)

Anyone know more about Freeview? I'm guessing it's just a promotion to get people to buy digital? ie...if we already have an HD TV then we don't need to change anything?

cheers

Not that I care much for sport, but anything would be more useful than that bloody demo loop that we get on SC10 HD for most of the time.

yeah i looked at their site, canberra are the only 'metropolitan' area that doesnt get the big channels like nine and seven, instead getting WIN, prime and the dreaded SC10.

i think we still may get OneHD sports channel, it just depends on what SC10HD decide to show.

im sure people will get majorly peeved if they go out and buy a freeview enhanced STB and then discover they cant get all 15 advertised channels.

and yes freeview is a just brandname for FTA to get people to switch to digital. the ad claims 15 new channels but in reality people who already get digital tv
already have these 15 channels, except come 2009, 5 of the channels will show something different to the other channels. e.g prime view 1,2,3 will no longer be the same. (they really needed this changed for the olympics earlier this year)

I understand it wont be for everyone, but there certainly has been much fanfare in my circles around NBA Basketball coming to OneHD on Feb 2. With almost a game a day for the next 3 months, all broadcast, in HD great expectation has been built in that community. So what do we Canberrans get at 6:30 this morning, that bloody demo loop, whilst my mates in the big smoke all rave about how awesome the picture and sound is.

As a long time reader and first time contributor, and as a passionate Canberran, I agree with many of the sentiments on here. There is clearly a digital divide where the regional broadcasters are the pawns and little cousins of the Major cities media giants and as such are treated with disdain. What we are feeling here is something many of our country cousins have felt in the past over issues like broadband, health and education, and certainly the fedral governemnt of various colours has stepped in and "levelled the playing field".

In this instance they are reluctant to intervene as it's the "untouchables"- Channels 7, 9 and 10. C'mon Stephen Conroy, step in and tell them to play fair. Sure they may hold you and your governments future in their editorial hands, but have a go. Afterall, this is sport we're talking about! wink.gif

we actually got the superbowl on SC10HD.

pleasantly surprised

That's only because the NFL was also on the SD channel.

I'm sure you didn't get the NBA game before it.

We only had 2 ch stereo from the latrobe valley, where I think ch 1 melb had 5.1
One day they'll put the infrastructure in place I hope.

SC10 plans to do it by the end of feb, but i wouldn't hold your breath considering how long we've waited already.

If only I could get my Elgato EyeTV Diversity to see channel 10

i dont think we did get NBA, but im just surprised coz sometimes we get letterman on SD10 but not on HD.

Again last night Neighbours was not shown on SC10 HD. Not really sure what Sydney were showing on 10HD at the same time seeing that's where we get the feed from. The missus is starting to get really pissed of when sitting down after the kids have gone to bed to discover a full 30 minute episode of the HD loop.

Until December, Letterman was almost always only on 10SD, with a movie being shown on 10HD, hence only SD on SC10.

But my theory goes out the door after aceman's post ;-)

Yep, its incredible how much SC10 drop the ball. Neighbours is one of the few 10HD show they actually broadcast and half the time they forget to flick the switch. Usually it is in the EPG but last night I noticed that it was missing. Maybe they are dropping their shows in preparation for One HD?

Yes, apparently SC10 ARE showing the ONE HD sports channel.
See related link here..

http://www.mediaspy.org/report/2009/01/sou...o-carry-one-hd/

But what this means is that there will be NO HD simulcast of any of the programs on TEN's main channel ie. no Neighbours, Rove, etc in HD.
They will be screened in SD only.
This also applies to metropolitan Network TEN viewers.
aceman
So now that TEN have announced the start date for ONE HD can we assume that SC10 HD will also commence the service on the same date? Or are we just kidding ourselves in Canberra where they will just tell us that they expect to have it up and running by the end of the year?
hingo
Well apparently SC10 are going to be ready for the launch so fingers crossed. I think its the least us SC10 viewers deserve after such a long wait. It appears as though they have stopped broadcasting any of their usual shows on SC10HD as nothing appears in the EPG aside from the High Definition Demonstration.
aceman
Letterman is not HD anymore, I havn't bothered to check whether regular ones like neighbours are still on HD as we now just record SD as it's more reliable.
hingo
What worries me is that there has still been no official word from SC10 if One HD will be starting on channel 50. The MediaSpy Report has said that they will begin broadcasting from the launch (March 26) but there is no mention of any source for that information. Judging by the way SC10 has dumped their regular HD programming, I'm guessing that they are preparing for OneHD. Even then what are they going to name the channel? Southern Cross One?

Nothing would make me happier than watching the extended Melbourne Grand Prix broadcast from the comfort of my lounge. I was sitting in one of the stands last year in the 40 degree heat but it was still awesome!
hingo
Looks like Southern Cross have failed us again...

any way to kick the regionals out?

....sounds a bit weird and nutty, but if 9, 7, and 10 wanted to, couldn't they just buy out Win, Prime, and Southern Cross Ten in Canberra?

I don't quite understand how it would work... but do I have some slim hope? Or am I just raving on about nothing like an absolute idiot.... dry.gif

If we're supposedly a "metropolitan market", then I think we deserve a lot better. Canberra's the capital city of Australia (contrary to people's beliefs), and we shouldn't have the problems the regional areas are having. Come to think of it, the regional areas shouldn't be having problems either... but you would expect when you live in the capital city of Australia, that you would have TV that was up to par with the other capital cities, if not better (even though our population isn't that big).
aceman
FFS why is the AFL not on. Even the yahoo seven guide says that the footy starts 8.30. Instead we have sister act on SD, HD and analog. For the love of god I'm in deep despair.
