I purchased a Strong SRT 5405 which is a HD STB.

I have the SPDIP output set to PCM, I can hear the audio but if I set it to AC3 then there is no audio on any HD channels. I have the SRT 5405 plugged into my VCR then TV.

I can only have 1 SD WIN channel tuned in at a time. I have to delete the WIN channel then manual scan to get the other WIN channel from a different location.

Has anyone else had these problems.

I did get in contact with the retailer who I got it off but the boss is away until next week and I have to wait until then to see what happens. In the meantime I thought I'd post here to see if it's a common problem.

I had audio sync problems with all the HD channels but a firmware update fixed that problem.

I'm not familiar with the Strong 5405, however it sounds to me that the AC3 option is used when you want to bitstream the audio to a receiver that is capable of decoding AC3 audio (such as DD5.1 etc). I am almost positive that your VCR does not have the capability to decode the digital sound - hence you are getting no sound. I expect you would typically connect the 5405 to an AVR that is capable of decoding the digital the sound and under these circumstances you would set to AC3. Given you are connecting to a VCR, you need the 5405 to decode the sound and send a PCM audio stream to the VCR

I also have a Teac HDB840 and the AC3 is selected. I have no problems with the audio through my VCR with that unit. I've also tried the unit on a mates TV with the same problems

Why do you want it set to AC3 if you have the analogue audio connected to your VCR, it doesn't make any sense to me to have it setup as anything else apart from PCM if you are only listening to 2channels via a VCR. Some STBs may still decode to 2channels if kept at AC3 but it is pointless to keep it in AC3 if you are only interested in 2channels.

Tech support at Strong said it's weird that it's not working. I'm just trying to find out if others have had the same problem.

if I set it to AC3 then there is no audio on any HD channels.

I just picked one of these up today. Its connecting it to an AV receiver capable of just about every format under the sun via HDMI and I have the exact same problem. When set to AC3, HD channels are silent while others sound fine. On PCM all channels produce sound.

I've tried on different resolutions and it doesn't work either. The AV receiver is definitely setup correctly.

The firmware is listed as 1.0/2009.03.11. Did you ever manage to get this working?
