I read on the back of the PS3 version of "The force unleashed" that it is only in 720p. Yet another reason to get the XBox 360 version which is in 1080p. Xbox wins again.

I'm sure the 360 version would only be rendered in 720p and upscaled by the console. I do like Microsoft's approach to resolutions better than Sony's though.

I'd love to see a true 1080p rendered game which is actually half-decent on any console (to justify our 1080p TV purchases besides just Blu-ray and something to brag about to our 768p-owning friends tongue.gif ) but sadly, something tells me it will not happen for this current gen.

Having said that, this game still looked gorgeous as with so many others.

He's right, it's still only native 720p. 360 is upscaling it. Very few games are made in 1080p, most just get upscaled by the console. So at least Sony's is being honest about it instead of false advertising like the 360. Pity the game is naff too.

A good effort, Iain, but you missed a few...

The question was answered in Issue 18 of the PlayStation Official Magazine - UK. And I quote:

QUOTE
Ridge Racer 7, Lair, Blast Factor, Calling All Cars, Flow, LocoRoco Cocoreccho, Mesmerize (Distort), PixelJunk Racers, PixelJunk Monsters, Piyotama, Super Stardust HD, Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection and GT5 Prologue are all in 1080p.

GT5 Prologue is not Full HD 1080p - it's something convoluted like 1280 x 1080. Still looks amazing though.

Except for jaggies (look at the power lines) sad.gif

To be fair X-Phile (and not that I am bagging the PS3 as I own one over a 360) but most of the games you listed are PSN games that have tiny sprites

Ie

LocoRoco
PixelJunk
Memorise
Piyotama

But if we are getting technical we also missed:

Virtua Tennis 3
Singstar
Mortal Kombat 2
Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo Remix
The Last Guy
1942 Strike
Go! Sudoku

But with the possible exception of VT3, none of those would push the PS3 in regards to processing power to display the 1080p signal

HAHA for the first 8 months of the PS3 cycle (when there was nothing out but EA sports games and horrid Tom Clancy shooters) it was Sudoku and Resistance that kept my faith in PS3!

Oh and MK2

Well, quite apart from the fact that the games I listed were taken verbatim from the pages of OPM - UK (note: they weren't my list tongue.gif ), and that the list was relevant as of May, I'm not surprised that a few more 1080p games have made the cut.

Oh, and feel free to "bag" the PS3 all you want (as I own a 360 too)... but there's no way in hell you'd ever convince me that PSN's motley bag of odds 'n' sods could EVER compete with Microsoft's jam-packed service. And no, I'm not sour that the only game in living memory I'd sell my soul for - WipEout HD - isn't an option for me as I have no credit card.

Hell, even Nintendo caters for all comers with its Wii Points - limiting your wares to credit-only purchases is spectacularly shortsighted, IMO (and yet another reason why my cash flow is routinely diverted Microsoft's way).

WTF? Double Posted AGAIN - in the same topic?!! IDGI.

X-Phile - I believe that you can get preloaded PSN cards in the US to solve that very problem. But they're not easy to find.

As for the other question, yes - there are several other games that run at 1080p on the PS3. But those two are the ones that make me want to buy a machine to play them, and the question was 'actually half-decent' 1080p games.

I checked out WipEout HD yesterday. For some reason I was never a fan of these futuristic racers (except F-Zero on the SNES) but this one was great and definitely more than "half-decent" smile.gif

Sorry but you're a tosser for that kinda comment. Does this mean the Wii - with it's inferior resolution - is a lesser console?!

When are people gonna realise that the difference between 720 and 1080 is marginal and what's more important is the playability of the game.

its even more marginal when the 1080 is achieved via hardware upscaling and is not native

Exactly - and if you have a 1080i/p TV it is doing that for you in order to display the frames against it's native resolution anyway. 1080 Sega Master System anyone? tongue.gif

It is rather marginal when the 360 is only doing it by upscaling, yes. But it's a multiplatform title that has the very same playability on the two consoles. At this point, other considerations, like which machine has the nicer graphics or the more comfortable controller becomes relevant.

You might as well step into Blu-ray/HD DVD arguments to point out that you'd rather watch Das Boot on an old VHS tape recorded off the telly than U-571 on either format. It's a perfectly sensible opinion to hold, but pretty irrelevant.
