Hi all,

For those who are interested, K-Mart has a sale starting on Thursday this week, with an OLIN HD set-top box for $99 (says regular price is $129).

I have no idea what these boxes are like - I just noticed it in the catalogue this morning, so thought I'd spread the word!

Cheers,
Craig

Hey Stu

I live in an apartment building that does not have full digital. I can get the Foxtel channels however I cannot get box office or any of the Free to air channels on foxtel and the IQ does not work. It has some to do with our apartment building only having horizontal polarity and not vertical polarity, or something like that!.

Is it worthwhile me getting one of the Hailos? Surely I won't get digital channels if I have to plug in my current aerial.

Look forward to your comments

You need to clarify your post a little if you want Stu to help.

I don't have a crystal ball, and I dont know where you live but if the answer is yes to either of the following questions then I would suggest that you will get all the HD/SD free to air channels
available in your area. The relevance to Foxtel is minimal.

Can you clearly pick up normal analogue channels via internal (ie rabbit ears etc) or external (ie in-wall connection to a communal rooftop aerial) antenna.

If so you can be confident that this unit will have 90% signal strength.

The Halio is made by the same manufacturer, comes with a 2year warranty vs 1year. Latest firmware as standard, overcomes issues with
upgrading through a serial port and buying a cable that is seldom found and costs you extra $$$ & A Free cable of choice as a bonus.
Over $49RRP value. (1m HDMI, HDMI to DVI or Component) $99 delivered AU wide

If you still want the Olin I'm happy to match any competitors price!

wacko.gif Dear Craig

I purchased an MTV HD set-top box from Coles last week, for $109. I had to take it back as it didn't work! Got another and "that" one didn't work either! The woman who served me said she had already had 3 back "that" day! They're lemons!!!!!!!

Hi I dont have the ability to start a new topic for some reason, I just want to know, I have a older non digital tv, and want HD digital TV access, but I also want to record in HD, do i need a HD digital set top box AND a HD DVD recorder, or does the HD DVD recorder double as a set top box?

Yep, HD DVD Rec. or HD PVR acts as a HD STB and Recorder,if you purchase one you won't need a HD STB.

That's very expensive. Aren't there any cheaper ones around? Coles or Aldi or Woolies perhaps?

What do you mean cannot get full digital? I live in an apartment too, can't we all get full digital if we buy a HD digital top box?

Or do you mean older apartment blocks need to update their roof aerial to support digital transmission?

Why don't you go and have a look? You might get lucky. I picked up an OLIN 1800 from Coles for $50 late last year. They must've been a clearance item.

Otherwise, around $90 to $100 still seems to be the going rate, which I hardly consider expensive.

yes - most of the digital stations are in the old UHF bands - which generally weren't used (until ch28) so the distribution amps, antennas, etc didn't deal with that band at all/very well
On the upside, most rabbit ear style indoor antennas work just fine for digital reception biggrin.gif

Relative to what HD STB's cost when they first became available, $100 is nothing. But if $100 is an issue for you, just wait for some KevCash, I suppose.
