hi all

was wondering if anyone else noticed the sound dropouts during WIN HD transmission over the weekend? eg during Troy, which was actually broadcast in DD5.1, but I had this 5 second silence every 10 minutes or so.

Noticed it this morning on the Today programme on HD as well...

Also noticed minor pixellation during some scenes on Troy and some other programs on WIN HD. Is this a known problem?

I'm in Canberra

cheers

I noticed it also (in Canberra) - it was a shame as it stuffed up what could have been a good soundtrack...I think WIN have ongoing issues with their HD audio stream which I'm surprised no one at their broadcasting studios seems to have fixed - this seems to happen on all of their 5.1 broadcasts...

I would think all it would take is a tech listening to the soundtrack that is being broadcast - it seems the dolby digital track is failing, you'd get every 30 seconds or so the blank patches, then it would go beserk for a few seconds flicking from 2.0 to 5.1 and vice versa...it gets to a point where it is not worth watching their HD channel. Pity really as the other two stations SC10 and Prime only give a lousy stereo track on their HD channels...

Surely it cant be too hard to broadcast a program without technical issues like these!

Perhaps someone needs to call them and let them know. I'm not sure of the correct number to call.

I emailed them from the contact details on their web site some time ago.

No response from them at all.

I wonder what they are doing.
I decided to watch Wheel of Fortune tonight on ch 8 from Traralgon site. Desperate?
The PQ was woeful.
Checked the picture on ch 9 from melb. That was far and away a better picture.
I seem to see this problem with their Ch 9 News repeat as well.
The picture always looks a little furry.

Generally makes me turn it off to another station.

i think it would be great if more people would ring them. I rang WIN TV in Canberra. Their number is 6234 5699

tell them you want to complain about the HD transmission. They might put you through to engineering in Canberra, otherwise in Woolongong.

cheers

Also been having Audio problems with WIN HD here in Canberra...

It's been driving me crazy the last few weeks...
Especially Footy Classified 10:30pm Mondays & The Footy Show AFL 9:30pm Thurs (tonight).

Every few minutes the sound mutes for 2-5 seconds.. Or.. goes all scratchy
Strangely.. the loop/adds in the breaks don't have the problem.. only the programme feed !!??

I have rung WIN (receptionist) here in Canberra several times over the last few weeks... But no call backs.

I'll ring again tomorrow.

You'd think in 2008 they could get the audio right sad.gif

Beyonwiz DP-S1 PVR, receiving from Canberra Black Mountain (about 6km from transmitter; good line-of-sight).

I've had the same problem with Sea Patrol II - I think it's about the only thing I watch on WIN HD. I thought it might have been out-of-band interference, so I put in a Kingray triplexer to shunt FM and all the other stuff under Channel 6 into my FM receiver (I have a chan 0-12 VHF antenna), and the next two episodes of SPII were perfect, then the problem came back for the last two episodes. I was beginning to wonder whether it was a problem with the BW, but this topic seems to indicate that it's not just me. I raised it on the Beyonwiz Forum shortly after SPII started, but no-one else seemed to be having the same issue. Like GPII, I never seem to have any audio glitches in the ads or the loop (ain't that great mad.gif ). The BW was reporting 99% signal quality each time I looked at the Tuner Info popup during the last SPII broadcast.

In one case, I recorded it as well as watching live, and the audio dropouts came at exactly the same places on replay as they did when I watched live, and in the same places even after I snipped out a few bad segments into separate files. This strongly suggests that the problem is before the decoder stage in the BW.

The Kingray hasn't been a complete loss, though -- it has reduced the occasional "normal" interference blockiness I was getting before I put it in.

Hi prl. I'm still having the same problem. Its now about 4 weeks since I first experienced problems. Although friends in ACT and other posters here on DTV threads have talked about this problem since early April.

Today I rang WIN Kingston 62345699 again.. and was finally was put through to Master Control Woolongong. ph 42234199.. The guys there were very eager to help and took my details.. BUT said they had not been aware of the problem. ( makes me wonder what happens to our complaints that go to Kingston ??? )

I only watch the AFL shows we don't get on SD here in ACT and the drop-outs are damn annoying..

As to the adds/scenic loop being unaffected, seems to indicate the problem is the 5.1 audio feed from NINE.

Prl,
You need to replace you antenna with one designed for Canberra. I say this because the FM signals are strong in Canberra and your antenna is also good at picking up mains bourne interference.
You need a crosspolarised antenna see Get the best reception Look at ACT and the appropriate band links from the table.

It's not the Bateman's Bay transmitters that are causing my problems, then?

Did I say somewhere that the polarisation orientation of my antenna was wrong? Apart from low gain below channel 6 (generally true for digital TV, nothing particular for Canberra) and having V polarisation for VHF and H for UHF, what suits an antenna particularly to Canberra? What is the problem using the triplexer to filter out the lower band VHF from the TV signal?

I have the same problem, attempting to watch Footy Classified or AFL Footy Show is useless to me, I get no sound on these programs at all.

The sound returns when they go to the demo loops or adverts during these shows, but the sound disappears as soon as the AFL show starts again.

WIN at Kingston won't help you, its all done from Wollongong from what I understand, and they have been useless fixing problems in the past.

Watched bits of AFL footy show last night (signal from Mt Baranduda) and there were audio dropouts and the overall volume was low. There's no point watching anyway as it looks the same PQ on SD. In fact I thought it looked slightly better on SD> It's certainly not an HD broadcast.
GP11
Still the same here in Canberra (Turner - Black Mountain)..
Footy Classified was hopeless AGAIN last night.. with the same 3-5 second audio drop-outs approx every 5 minutes..
It makes watching an audio debate driven programme impossible to enjoy.... I sit here continually counting 1..2..3..4.. then the sound comes back, then a few mins later the same thing...
And as previously stated here.. the loop/adds are fine.. no drop-outs at all.

I haven't had a word from WIN as to a solution/explanation.

BTW the pic quality in HD is excellent smile.gif

Today show this morning on WINHD had plenty of dropouts and, for some odd reason, seemed to have audio delay but only on external broadcasts...not in the studio bits...

can never get anyone at Win to answer!

I am in Issac and have no direct line of sight to Black Mt or Tuggeranong Hill. I can pick up all channels from Mt Taylor. I have the same problem with WIN. Sometimes its clear, sometimes its broken up and sometimes no signal at all. Doesn't WIN come from the same mast as the other channels?
satz
i don't think it's anything to do with reception quality.

I'm in line of sight to Black Mountain, too.

I think it's just poor quality equipment/processes that WIN are using...and they don't appear to care!

Just to clarify the above, assuming your talking digital signals Win does not transmit from Mt Taylor nor does SC Ten or Prime. you can only receive SBS UHF 57 and ABC UHF 59 digital channels from Mt Taylor.
If your antenna is pointing at Mt Taylor and you are receiving Win Prime ans SC Ten they would most likely be coming from Black Mountain.
You would be receiving VHF signals with UHF antenna focused 90 degrees in another direction, this would create some signal quality issues.

That could be the cause of Hotair's problem, but like satz, I have direct line-of-sight to Black Mountain, and I'm only 6km away, and my antenna orientation & polarisation is correct.
