Full Version: Prime Canberra - Anyone Else With Signal Quality Issues

I live in the Fisher (Weston Creek) area of Canberra and two weeks ago, all my digital TV channels were just fine and watchable.

I took a long weekend away two weekends ago (left Canberra on the 11th and returned on the 15th) and found that Prime is just untunable/unwatchable on my older Toshiba HD S23 tuner and my other STBs seem to be having problems with a stable signal when they can tune it.

I tried a temporary solution of portable rabbit ears and a second indoor antenna with a built-in booster but it doesn't improve things.

I've got a second Tevion HD tuner (from Aldi) and, although it seems to be able to tune Prime, it gets a jittery picture on Prime but the other channels seem to be OK.

I haven't climbed up outside to check my outside antenna or the connections and cables but just wondered if anyone else started to experience similar problems or issues with Prime at the moment that they didn't have a couple of weeks ago.

I did speak with Prime and they tell me everything as far as they know is fine and there weren't any changes made by them to the transmitters or digital parameters in the last few weeks.

Feedback via this forum, please.

Thanks in advance.

Actually, yes. I still haven't been able to put my finger on it, which is why I hadn't posted anything on here until now. I first noticed a problem with Prime early last Monday morning. One particular PVR was saying "No Signal" most of the time, but all other devices could still receive Prime OK. So I did what I've been meaning to do for a while anyway; replaced the main TV antenna and cable run to the distribution amp, and moved it to the other end of the house, where it has a clear view of the Tuggeranong Hill translator. (The old antenna was the original from who-knows-when, and apart from being on the small side and looking rather sad, was now looking through a tree across the road. And fed with crap cable.... yet it was all working fine until recently.)

But even with the new antenna, Mrs 2905 said that she'd since seen "No Signal" on Prime, and early this morning I saw it again myself. So today I replaced the (mediocre) cable run from the distribution amp to that particular outlet; time will tell if it makes any difference. If not, I'll try swapping amp outputs. Even if it is something that Prime is doing (and I now suspect that it is), there's still something that's not quite right in my setup.

So you'd be getting Prime from Black Mt, then?

In short, yes there is a problem with some receivers and Prime (Canberra only). We have only noticed it with 2 different model Philips HDTV's and some LG products. I am interested to know of any other products that are affected.
I have been to Prime and had extensive talks with them, I have sent Philips a copy of the affected transport stream and they were at our shop yesterday performing their own testing.
There is no apparent fault with the signals, Prime have not changed anything in the last 2 weeks and the fault displays differently on the same chasis Philips HDTV's.
It is a interesting one, I'll keep you posted.

It's been a while since I've posted and since then two things have disappeared:
1. www.dba.org.au
2. Prime TV

I have the following receivers (and antenna/aerials):
1. Sony KD-32NX200AUS connected to a DSE L4017 Indoor UHF/VHF TV Antenna.
2. Elgato EyeTV 410 connected to the included "whip" style aerial.

Although being far from the best setup for reception - it has been perfect up until about 4 days ago.

It'd be nice to know what is going on. unsure.gif

When I was watching DOND this afternoon I had signal, except for a couple of very brief dropouts. The signal level was way down until about 1753, when it momentarily dropped out again, then came back at its normal (or so) level.

Signal quality level was down again this morning when I was watching Sunrise between 0600 and 0700 this morning, with dropouts now and then. I haven't swapped my distribution amp outputs around yet, but I noticed that one of the TV's (Panasonic TH-42PX7A) on another output was having trouble with the signal as well.

A question for Gadget, perhaps..... Does the Tuggeranong translator get its signal off-air from Black Mtn, or via a dedicated link? I tried a bit of a Google search, but couldn't find anything.

Everything seems to be (at least for me) back to normal.
100% signal and 99% quality - no picture break-ups on the Sony and I actually get a picture on the EyeTV.

Whatever they've done (or not done) - it's good!

I had picture breakup on my system this morning, until today I had not had any problems. My techs reported poor quality signal on Prime this morning, the plot thickens. wacko.gif

Tugg Hill receives it's transmission over the air from Blk Mtn, if Blk Mtn plays up so will Tugg Hill.

I spoke too soon. It has died again.

I'm getting my signal from Black Mountain.

Now, strangely, today, Anzac Day, prime is in fit form.

I've been able to retune the frequency and get a "perfect" picture on my trouble STB.

I've also noticed that, on my other STB that could receive Prime, the signal wasn't as good as I thought.

Watching the 4:30 news, the ticker along the bottom of the screen was jumping as if it was missing every other frame but the image of the newsreader was (seemed to be) OK.

Today, on both STBs, the news was working. No jumping ticker. M*A*S*H was fine from start to end and Prime seems to be "fixed" without anyone claiming they did anything.

If anyone does find out if there was a problem, just for curiosity sake, please post here.

Thanks and regards
Rico
I don't want to jinx it, but everything seems to have been fine for the last couple of days.

A family member down in Tuggeranong runs a Panasonic DMR-EZ47V tuned into Tuggeranong Hill and was getting the same problems with Prime. All seems fine now.

One of life’s little mysteries. blink.gif

If I find out I'll post it here.
