Brand new Samsung 32" R81 bought today with no digital signal in Kambah.

Have had digital before, never a great signal, but OK.

Is this a dud or am I?

I'd appreciate any thoughts

thanks

I believe Kambah is one of those problem suburbs (areas in the shadow of Mt Taylor & a fair distance from Tugg Hill). Can you give us a few more details - roughly which part of Kambah, indoor or outdoor antenna pointed which way, etc?

I am near Athlon Drive opposite Waniassa.

Outdoor antenna pointed to Tuggeranong Hill.

I had digital coverage through a super cheap set top box until it packed it in about 3 months ago.

Is it odd to have no signal at all? I would expect that even in the shadow of Mt Taylor I'd get something.

Appreciate your help

You will need to eliminate the various things to sort out what is going wrong.

I noticed you say no digital picture, does this mean the analogue tuner is working? If so does your TV use a loop-through cable from the analogue to digital tuner like Sony TVs do?

If you have access to a second TV to hook up to the antenna would tell you if the antenna is the problem. Also changing the antenna cable from wall socket to TV is a good idea. If the antenna is a problem a company like Kaz Electronics can help. http://www.kazelectronics.com.au/

If a second TV works OK then its checking the TV. Make sure its connected correctly. A few years ago I accidently connected the antenna cable to the antenna out on a new LG TV. I spent 10 minutes wondering why its reception was so poor until I noticed my mistake.

Although this is rare I believe that some equipment can be tripped up when auto tuning by the fact that all channels use the same numbers from both Black Mountain and Tugg Hill - the equipment will lock onto the weaker Black Mountain channels and ignore Tugg Hill. Check that the channels are tuned into the following frequencies:

SBS UHF 57 Hor 732.5 MHz
ABC UHF 59 Hor 746.625 MHz
SC10 UHF 62 Hor 767.5 MHz
WIN UHF 65 Hor 788.5 MHz
PRIME UHF 68 Hor 809.5 MHz

The Samsung has one antenna input.

You mention you may have a weak digital signal. If you are doing a Plug & Play (or Auto Store from the D.MENU) then the set may not be locking onto your signal, although in my experience these sets have sensitive tuners.

Try doing a manual digital tune (page 32 of the user manual) with the channel information mddawson has given to see if this at least gets something happening for you.

Analogue is fine.

I can't manual tune the dtv in, when I press the dtv/tv button I get a "no signal" message and the menu options will not let me into any tuning options.

Thanks

Try page 44 "Resetting", then try a manual digital tune again.

To get into digital tuning, as highlighted on page 32 of the manual, to get into the digital menu, you need to press the "D.MENU" button on the remote control.

I have a similar problem.

A relatively new Panasonic Viera picks up only Prime, SBS and (occasionally) WIN (usually 'bad' or 'no' signal). ABC and Capital are total no-shows! We live in Duffy. We have survived so far on Transact.
The auto tune picks up all channels on analogue, but they are extremely snowy - with even worse sound.

An older analogue TV elsewhere in the home, picks up all channels. The pictures are not fantastic, but certainly better than the new-beaut widescreen TV.

Our home is little more than a year old, as is the antenna. The antenna points to Black Mountain, which is visible from our home. I have rung the antenna installers (who did it through the builders), but the person was strangely disinterested in hearing that one of their installations was performing way below par.

I have tried another coaxial cable, resulting in slightly improved reception of Prime and WIN. Repeated attempts to 'Add New Services' and 'Manual tune' are unsuccessful.

Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated.

Your antenna should be a VHF/UHF model with the VHF elements vertical and the UHF horizontal - is this what you have?

Do you still have the old TV (or another) to test the antenna?
