My folks are after ABC2 and have an old 68cm TV and I thought it might be better to get a HD box for multichannelling commercial stations aswell just in case. It was going to be an Xmas pressie but haven't been able to find one anywhere. All we could find was SDs or PVRs, no-one has had any stock of HD STBs and the only one everyone seemed to carry was an LG for $350.

I just found this for $179 and haven't been able to find much about the company or the model on the web. Anyone had any experience with these?

* HDMI output (HDCP compliant)
* Component video output
* Optical & coaxial digital audio
* Universal Remote Control
* Closed captions
* Super fast channel change
* Simultaneous HD / SD Outputs
* Intuitive i-Plate for now & next information
* Multi-video format (576p, 1080i, 720p)

It comes with a 12month warranty, and on the box said it has 7 day apg. I am very new to this so a quick n00b Q - does it need to have 576i for the folks old CRT?

Thanks alot

To answer your last question - yes. It also needs to have a connection suitable for the old 68 cm crt tv. You should check what connections the folks old tv has.
To get the benefits of "multichannelling" the hd stb needs to down convert "Multi-video format (576p, 1080i, 720p" to 576i. Which it probably does, you just need to check that it does and that it does over the connection that can be plugged into the older tv.

Re nextwave as a brand. In the "early days" of DTV they had an excellent reputation for reception. Of course each brand is only as good as its newest model. I got a 3190 early on and that was when Eastwood Hi Fi stocked them. Now, if Steve stocks something it has to be. . . . . .
I found nextwave to be responsive and helpful when I contacted them for information and software support.
Five years on the STB ticks on without fault. Hope this helps to assure that they are a known brand.

Thanks alot for the info guys.

Thanks Billy thats what I thought, the folks TV just has composite and S-video I'll see if I can find out if it does it. Finally found another stb at Clive Peeters the DGTEC HD9000 it does 576i but didn't have anything about apg on the box, but reading through posts here it is very clear to stay well away from DGTEC.

Thanks DigitalObserver, that is good to know I had never heard of them before. Like you said alot may have changed in 5 years? wink.gif Hoping someone might have a recent experience with them hopefully with a HD box please?

Thanks again!

I dont know much about these but sony central are selling them here is brisbane for $190. If they are selling them i'd imagine they'd be resonable quality.

Not all stb can resolve the display of a widescreen image on a 4:3 tv. The last few posts on the " Mtv Set Top Box Hd" thread give an example. If possible ask to see the stb running connected to a 4:3 tv. S-Video should give very good picture quality on the 4:3. That is to say a crt would not be capable of displaying a better picture than what is available over an S-video connection. IMHO but I would buy this cable if it did not come with the stb.

I can confirm DigitalOserver's post that this brand was very well thought of on these DTV forums, just have not heard much about them lately. Unfortunately the brand I bought 5 years ago (Thomson) is not worth a pinch of "s" by today's standards and was confined to the scrap heap in good working order.

Well, I bought one of these just after Christmas (from a Good Guys here in Perth) and so far, so good - though I don't really have anything to compare it to as it's my first STB. But it seems to work the way it's meant to; the reception's good (although we always had good analog reception in this location anyway); it has 7-day EPG as reported; overall, it's quite easy to use & to get familiar with.

Negatives: none to speak of... except I think I'd take issue with their touted "super-fast channel change", as it can sometimes take 2-3 secs for a channel to kick in, once selected. Or does that in fact count as super-fast in the world of HD STBs?

The model that the original post was about - the Nextwave THD-6190. Don't remember exactly how much it was... $190-$200, I think.

I bought a THD-6190 from Videopro at Fortitude Valley tonight. Fingers crossed it does the job with my projector. Won't know for a few days until I get everything hooked up with the projector. $174 for those interested.

with luck, it will be up and running tomorrow. I gotta build some shelves in my AV cupboard (for amp, blu ray, STB etc ) and mount my projector tomorrow so that everything can be hooked up properly. The Nextwave is still sitting in it's box atm...
