I've read that Plasma technology will introduce 10 lumens technology - apparently this will increase the brightness of screens enabling them to compete with LCDs in the critical shop setting. They will also be cheaper to produce and use less power. I understand Pioneer, Panny and LG factories will incorporate this into the 2008 releases. I believe Panasonic is also introducing some new type of plasma cell to compete with Pioneer's black levels. Not as good as the current 8th Generation Pioneers, but better than currently offered. Panasonic should be announcing their 2008 products during CES on Jan 7-10.

As far as LCD is concerned, LED backlighting is all the rage to improve Black Levels. Some people feel, however, that localised backlighting can bleed into other portions of the screen giving non uniform colour control. Still a big improvement over existing technology.

Cheers.

LED backlighting is certainly going to be the new premium LCD screen in 2008. CEDIA should see some interesting announcements in this area.

SIM2 is collaborating with Dolby Laboratories to bring their LED backlight technology to market.

Laser TV needs to make a positive announcement at CEDIA as all the momentum is shifting towards OLED panels as the next TV technology. Matsushita (Panasonic), Hitachi and Canon have announced they are going to collaborate on R&D to accelerate its development.

720p screens should start to disappear from the major screen manufacturers model line-up's as they are no longer profitable enough. Second tier manufacturers will increasingly dominate this market segment.

Sony is ceasing production of RPTV's as they are losing too much money on them, It seems only Americans buy them (and Owen) smile.gif

Hitachi recently quit the RPTV market along with Seiko-Epson.

Fujitsu has announced that it is quitting the plasma market in March 2008.

I guess all these companies wanted to get the negative news stories out of the way before CEDIA begins.
