Last year, quite early on, there was talk of a new breed of TV based on laser technology.

Does anyone know if they are still going to be put into production or if they have been well and truly forgotton about?

From my knowledge they were meant to be THE next best thing, up from plasma/LCD.

Laser Tv Delay

Supposed to have been out by early 2008, but looks like it's just still vapourware wink.gif

Lazer TV would be a rear projection system, and really only useful for BIG screens over 60”, so I would not expect it to be marketable or popular, just as other rear projection TV’s have been.

Sony have just announced that they will be discontinuing all RP tvs as they were only selling about 400,000 worldwide, which is peanuts on a global scale. They are concentrating on LCD and OLED.

Laser TV was supposedly being developed by Mitsubishi but nothing new lately. Should stick with building Lancers!

The last report I read on laser TV (from an Australian lab) was that this was initially easier to develop for small screens such as phones and PDAs - bright, clear and low power requirements. It was an array of minuscule lasers each in their own tiny 'pixel', so any TV development would be a flat screen not rear-pro, I guess.

Flat panel CRT sounds like SED, which is apparently on indefinite hold.

flat CRT = SED right? Thats looking a bit vapourwarish at the moment as well, we'll see whats happening at CES in a couple weeks time if neither make a showing there, their future looks dim.

I was not aware of that type of Lazer display. Sounds interesting but also expensive to make into large screens.
It should be very bright, making it ideal for phones, cameras and other small devices that are used outdoors.

For indoor use, I cant see that it would offer much if anything over SED.
