Does anyone know if a STB can be reset to factory. My turns on and off but can't get anything on the TV screen.

I can't recall any that I've ever come across that don't, but of course it helps a lot if you can see the menu that you're trying to navigate through. If you're not getting anything on your screen, perhaps it's one of those boxes that can only output to any one output at a time, and it's somehow been switched to one of the others. What make and model is it, as maybe somebody else here has one?

Could be other reasons too, of course.

It is a samsung dtb-9401F. It would be nice to know if there are any particular buttons to press to get a reset.

The remote stopped working when a Logitech Universal Remote was used. The STB doen't have a picture with the original remote or the Universal remote.

Sounds like its responded to some command from the universal that has switched it into an unusual (for the current setup) mode.

Like colin2905 noted above, sometimes STBs only output via one method, and if they are switched to that, you may see nothing. For example, if you are connected via composite video (yellow video, red, white audio) leads, and the output is switched to component, you may see nothing if the STB can only output via one method at a time.
Don't suppose you still have any audio? You'd probably have mentioned it if you did.

Mind you, the STB may simply have received a code burst from the universal remote that it didn't like, and has just locked up.

EDIT:
The manual only had this
"1.3 Reset to Factory Defaults
This to restore the factory set values in case the user has encountered some problems after changing any values of channel data and others which may be in error. At the request window, if you press the OK key, the receiver will be reset to factory default settings automatically.
Note : This cause your previous settings to be deleted!

..which of course is next to useless if you can't see a picture.

Can you try and call the techs at Samsung and talk to one of them? I'm sure there must be a way to do a full reset. Even if they have to open it and do the reset internally. Maybe they can talk you through something with the remote, or with a certain set of button pushes on the unit.

I have one of these as a replacement spare.

Try this: You will be doing this blind, at the end, hopefully, your box will be reset.

1) Turn power off to box, then back on. Using the set top box remote:

2) Press "MENU"

3) Press "OK"

4) Press 0 (zero) four times and press "OK" (this assumes your pin has not been changed from the factory default)

5) Press the down cursor control button twice (the one under the "OK" button)

6) Press "OK" twice, and your box should be reset.

The only thing that comes to mind is the box has somehow been set to component video, I can't check that as mine is on very long term loan sorting out a reception issue. I've never tried that, so don't know if the composite video is turned off in that mode. I'm also hoping those key presses are correct, as I am winging it from the manual.

Tried your suggestion a few times with no success. What is Component Video?

What is Component Video?

A video output mode that may stop normal video output from occurring.

I forgot one important step.

When you turn the box off and then on again, the front panel light should be green. If it is red, the box is in standby, and needs to be turned on with the POWER button on the remote.

Then try the sequence given.

If you have done that, there's not much more I can help with. Sorry.

It defines the way the video info is carried on the cable. And the type of cable.

Component video provides higher quality than the simple composite (the Yellow video, Red/Black audio leads).
On the composite video (yellow) one cable carries all the video info.
On a component cable, there are three separate video leads used. This keeps the video signal 'purer', as it holds separate the main parts of the signal.

Sorry to necro this post, but I can't make new topics.

I have one of the samsung 9401F models and am trying to reset the pin to 0000 as I don't have the current pin (it is a second hand model). Is there any way to do this?

just thought i'd add my 2cents here for anybody else's future reference.

My stb, same model as OP, stopped working randomly the other day. Was out of action for a couple of days, then magically started working again. I too have a Logitech universal remote that I use for another setup (This setup is directly one floor under the stb). I'm not 100% sure if that is what caused the problem, as I'm not too sure what affect it would have on the STB, but I noticed the OP was also using a universal remote and that may have somehow caused the problem.

Also, initally the default 0000 code didn't work, but after unplugging from the power board and trying again, it worked a charm
