Did Anybody happen to see that story on Today Tonight last night about buying Cheap Plasma's and LCD's I felt pity for that poor DLP Rear Pro they dumped at the tip. I bet there is another reason why it blows its lamps so regular + it seems to destroy its lamp housing too. My friend has one and it looks Identical like the one they dumped at the tip and I can tell you this that my mates was popping globes too early and beside finding a kilo of dust in it the lamp cooling fan was just about to expire.
Now I have an LG LCoS Rear Pro 71 Inch Display and I have purchased a service manual for it and a lot of emphasis is put on the 3 cooling fans and replacement of the dust duct + If you want the lamp to have a long life, use the set correctly and NEVER shut the TV down from the front main switch as the correct cycle is you first shut it down via the hand control which shut the tv down but allows the 3 fans to do their job for the next 2 minutes and if needed they will restart again and perform a cycle. Now if you shut the Display at the main switch or the mains ( Like that ad on Channel 7 tells you to do to save the planet and don't leave your set on Standby) you rob it from doing its correct cycle thus you are killing the globe and possibly damaging the lamp housing because of continual excessive heat. We all know or I hope we do that your computer CPU + fan needs attention depending on how much use it gets to get rid of the dust blocking the fan and the heat sink and I can tell you this that its you own any display that have a fan in it it will require maintenance at least once a year or just before summer. In the last two weeks I have cleaned out two Rear pros one a DLP and another was the same as mine both were rotten and clogged with dust.

On another note another friend of mine had trouble with a good name plasma which stuffed itself twice in 6 months from new but I got suspicious as this house had a habit of blowing things up and I decide to check his Voltage at the mains and it hung around the 260V mark around load time just after dinner, I never got to check it at around 10PM at night when the load is off, heaven forbid it would have gone higher, see he has a 11KV/415V tranny outside his front that feeds the street in the bush and the neighbours down the bottom with plenty of air conditioners were complaining about a lower voltage because the street mains were too small so It was easy for the power supply company to set the tap up on the tranny to boost it just a little but with devastating consequences to anyone that lived close to the transformer. So for Today Tonight and others next time you have a problem please look outside the square because something or some one else might be responsible for the problem.
By the way, I thank the Big Warehouse in Canberra for getting the service manual.

well said, and thanx Blackman.

Note too folks that a lot of equipment we used in Australia is really meant for 220V (whether it says that on back panel or not), so running on 240v doesn't help. Recently modded power supply in my under rated Dreambox (sat receiver) and all is now well with it.

So when you look at it if its rated at 220V and you shove 260V in it you wonder why it dies, As for those magic Heeeeeeeeeee Dreambox's My 7000's were modded years ago when I had hard drives in both of them and are still happy today, As for all Satellite receiver 99% are rated at 220V and some cook themselves for some reason my Nokias although rated at 220V never over heated only if you modded the cam in them..
Sorry guys of Topic.

Shouldn't it be "Today Tonight, don't buy into cheap TV" or I would say "Tabloid Turkeys, I don't buy into there bullshit!" biggrin.gif

Eh, I'll read this thread later, maybe it's not half bad a story.

EDIT: OK read the thread. Those stories they do on electronics is usually like American beer, watered down shite.

Any device "meant for 220V" is obviously designed to take standard voltage fluctuations (ie 220-240). Devices running "at 240" isn't going to make a difference whatsoever and certainly isn't going to contribute to an early death.

Also just as Australia has officially transitioned from 240 to 230V (most people don't even know this), many 220V nations are transitioning to (or have transitioned to) EU standard 230V.

If you check your voltage at different points around the house (GPOs),you will find that it can get upto 250V.

Even though its a difference of 30V,it shouldnt bother your Rectifier in you TV.

Not impressed with Kogan. I purchased a 19" LCD/PC in October 2006 and gave it as a present on Christmas day 2006. In November 2007, just outside of the 12 month warranty the screen developed vertical pink lines. Contacted Kogan who said:
bad luck can't help as outside warranty period and
cannot supply the parts required as the set is old technology.
I cannot recommend Kogan or their after sales service. Would not buy another one!!!! angry.gif mad.gif

I don't think they're an Aussie brand as such. There is an Aussie company but they're selling products from the main company I think.

If I remember what I learnt at Tafe, I think the acceptable range was +/- 10% from 240V, I.e. 216V to 264V.

Actually, come to think of, maybe you just hit a 5 instead of a 6.
zApped
Australian nominal voltage was 240v +/- 6%, it is now 230v +10% -6%. So in reality little has changed but none the less nominal voltage is in fact 230v.

Yes we do in case you havent noticed we are struggling to contain the power drop at TV transmission and radio sites.

Examples of the problems are 399 VAC 228VAC Three and Single phase and 20-30% drop in power levels on some ATV and DTV transmissions.

Most recent was yesterday when a UPS dropped out and put the local PIE rack on a commercial station I service off air.

A local major site is drawing 500 amps and we barely make 400 VAC.

We asked powercorp for a trace chart and had no option but to close down redundant standby services to shed site loads and cap the mains current at 500 amps.

One solution is to pull all the voltage regulators out of the NEC's and run off 400 volts.

Speaking of Harvey I was in the local store last week looking at LCD TVs,
so I can assess if we have DTV problems on TV services I maintain, when viewers complain on the hot lines.
What I noticed about the various displays scattered high and low on the wall was the viewing angle of some screens was shocking and you had to stand square on to get good response.
One exception was the L and G display which was bright and clear at viewing angles approaching 135 degrees.

So my question is.
The Kogan in this weekends TV Times The 37 KEV model has good or bad viewing angle and is this a fair assessment of a TV display?
If you were buying an LCD TV screen to do comparisons of services what would YOU BUY?

Also 2 cents worth
A lot of bagging goes on here about price and quality and yet you assume that the TV transmissions are without fault, which believe me they are not.
I also assume you all have the correct antenna installed and have the quality of signal necessary to keep error rates at a minimum and pixilation low.
The TV stations are playing ducks and drakes with the services, not all power levels are identical and differ by 3db and in some cases 6db.

ANyway what LCD display would you buy and has anyone bought the 37 inch model the 37KEV at $900?
2ZZ-GE
All my friends and I been buying from BingLee haymarket.
The lady provided very good service and recently one of mate's mate bought one, it was dead on arrival.

So he called her and she organised an immediate replacement on Monday morning and samsung came in with a brand new new install in his house.

He was in Vic and binglee is in NSW.

I think it is to do with the store and see what they can do and relationship woth the distributors and suppliers.

In many times, most sales people dont give a **** on you and thats why you have been get crap service.

Aren't TT and ACA the shows that reminds you that the dishes need cleaning. Or the cat needs feeding. Its normally a reminder that you are watching tv for no particular reason.

TT and ACA have been running out of good current events or 'affairs' for a long long time. This is why once a month they run the same stories.

Journalism at its best.
trognierrrr
The nominal voltage has changed to 230v in Australia with the +10/-6% that is true. In all reallity it will be a long time before anything changes. To put out a lower voltage at the transformers is plausable as you can change a tap setting to lower the voltage, but people living towards the end of the low voltage circuits would be really struggling with low voltages. Most transformers in urban areas will be set to put out around 250v without load, so people who live very close to a transformer will generally have a little higher volts than people who live towards the end of that low voltage circuit.

It would take a very larg infrastructure change in my opinion to actually change the system so that most people were getting around 230v instead of most people getting around 240v.

If I buy a cheap plasma TV and place it on a cheap glass table, do you think I'll get a week on TT/ACA when they both explode?
Or will I need the added impact of a toddler standing nearby?
