Well I finally got around to watching this HD-DVD title tonight, I have had it for a few weeks now but never found the right time to view it. Anyway I am not a person who usually goes in for the hicksville type of movie and that is exactly what you get with this one. However there is something unusually compelling in this movie and I cannot for the life of me put my finger on what it is that kept me riveted to it. Kevin Costner played a reasonable role but it was definitely the kids that stole the show. Kind of reminded my of The Sandlot in some respects but with a greater depth to it.

Video transfer was pretty good with a few film artifacts here and there. Audi transfer was very good and it came with a TrueHD soundtrack as well as a DD5.1+ track.

Probably a good movie to watch with an older child say 10+ so that they can grasp the context of the movie with some guidance from their parent.

Okay my wife decided that she wanted to watch the rest of this movie tonight after watching the first half two nights ago. Now my wife is a real sucker for a "tear your heart out" cry fest so she was in luck. laugh.gif

The last half of this movie is one emotional rollercoaster and if you don't like Kevin Costner then you will love this movie. laugh.gif

Again though the kids do one hell of a job at acting their characters parts.

I thought it was more about the ridiculous war stuff smile.gif

(its not so bad on this forum - but I can't stand reading comments on HighDefDigest about the 'war'. Some folk over in the US go on and on and on and on about it ..... almost like the Civil HD War of 2008)
SDL
"Don't mention the war. I mentioned it once, but I think I got away with it all right"

I reckon Clease could do a good send up of the HD war based on the Germans episode smile.gif

I watched this movie last night as I had the HD DVD for a couple of months from one of the closeout HD DVD sale. My wife didn't like it and walked out after 1/2 hour, but I stuck it out as it got better. The story isn't overly compelling but the acting by the kids is pretty decent, and OK for a nights entertainment.

The HD video is 4/5 - a bit grainy in some of the dark scenes but has a number of outdoor scenes where the colours just pop out. True HD sound is 3.5/5 OK but nothing to write home about, as its mostly a talkie movie.

Worth a rent if you like to watch the trials and tribulations of kids growing up in the poor South of the US.
