Don't think you can get a pvr that plays avi. PVR's only record digital broadcasts which you can play back later. You cannot transfer files to them. How about a dvd recorder with hdd? Aldi have one on special next week for $229 - 160G HDD plays mpeg4 (avi). http://aldi.com.au/

The BeyonWiz does this. But it's not cheap.

Some can, but generally you can only play the files if they are in the PVR's own format.

By the way, just because a file is an AVI does not guarantee the codec is playable (even on a PC). You can put content with many different codecs inside an AVI file.
AVIs would rarely be high enough quality that it needed a PVR to play it, so something like that Aldi might be a good option.
