G'Day All,

Last night at around 1am we had a blackout, and when I went to turn on my STB this morning I received the following indications on the display in quick succession:

"boot"
"C1.00"
Three audible clicks trough the amp
back to "--:--"

Being a stubborn bugger I kept pressing the power button and the behaviour started to change whereby the "boot" indication stayed on the screen for longer and longer. It then got to the point that the "boot" message was staying on-screen for the normal time then channel 07 would breifly appear (by this time the clicks had also dissapeared). So the behaviour had evolved to:

"boot"
"07"
"C1.00"
back to "--:--"

Eventually the 07 stayed on longer and longer until it booted up and I was presented with the channel scan screen (ie it had lost all of its channel settings). I rescanned the channel list and it appears to now be working OK. All in all I probably pressed the power button about 15-20 times.

This is the first time I have seen this behaviour - has anyone else seen this before? I have searched the forum for "c1.00" and "C100" but I could not uncover anything.

Cheers,

Josh.

Josh,

I have the same stb and since I live in Brisbane, there have been times when we have lost power during the summer electrical storms. My stb would not boot, just like yours. I unplugged the power cord for a few seconds and re-connected the power cord. The stb then operated as per normal.

Pressing the power switch takes the stb from on (operating) to standby (on, but "idling"). So, you were cycling through standby, on, standby, on, etc. Removing the 240volts by unplugging the power cord, pausing for a second or two, then re-connecting forces the processor to re-start from scratch. Worked for me on 3, maybe 4 times last summer. Hope it helps you.

Thanks for the tip.

Mine just did it again (I unplugged everything to reconnect as I have bought a new cabinet) and the same solution fixed the problem. I tried power cycling it once at the power point but in my case it didn't come good.

Also this time I did not have to re-tune. Strange - looks like a software bug I would think - probably a bit of un-initialised memory? I also found the following link:

http://www.dtvforum.info/lofiversion/index.php/t24961.html

IT looks like the 820 owners are seing this as well and Teac is in denial as to the problem, so I would think that the chance of a fix is zero at this time.

C'est la vie I guess...

Josh.

Hi Guys, i too have a Teac DVB800..amazing unit until i got the c.100 error as well. Teac will charge me $50 for telling me about the error message and then about $75 per hour plus parts to fix it! So, i opened up the little machine and have found that there is something ticking, maybe a transistor? Anyway, it is definitely on the power pcb. Will get the multi meter out and check it myself tomorrow. Anybody else been down this track? Oh, by the way, it was 1 month out of warranty!

How fast / slow is this "ticking"?

Curious

I have a DV-B800 that I bought 6 to 9 months ago. Everything has been going Ok until this week when noticed the C1:00 problem when the box boots up. It takes a gew attempts of booting before the signal comes through and the last channel is selected. This problem happens every time I boot up the box.

Has anyone attempted to take their unit back to the place of purchase to get a new unit / refund. I noticed some else made a comment that TEAC don't acknowledge this as a problem.
dazbeer
woke up yesterday morning and i had C1.00 flashing on the front of the display of my DVB800. Tried turning on and off and even left it off all day to no avail. I also notice a slight clicking sound. Any ideas?
I eventually found my reciept which politely told me I bought it 23.07.06 so 7 days past warranty......perfect timing for the manufacturer. Before this its been fine plugging into a panasonic 81CM LCD.
DrP
Try warranty anyway. Quite a few makers will still consider a warranty claim for something that is just outside.

Any of you guys have any luck resolving this c100 problem? Ours is well out of warranty. Have emailed Teac on the weekend - no reponse yet. mad.gif

I would just like to add to this thread regarding the dreaded C 1.00 problem.
My DVB 800 started doing this a week ago but after a short rest always came back on.
Then on Sunday it stayed in this "mode" and refused to boot, emailed TEAC, complete waste of time
in my opinion, rang customer support and as soon as I told them what the problem was they said they
knew of it and the box would have to go in for repair. They flatly refused to tell me what causes the fault
but after much complaining and heated discussion they agreed to waive the usual $55 fee for looking at it as they already knew what was wrong.

Today I bought an LG LST6100P and my first impressions are very good.
I have it hooked up to a TEAC PDP over component as my local DSE have no HDMI > DVI cables in stock.
Picture quality is outstanding (IMO) possibly better than the DVB800 over DVI. Channel scanning and initial setup was quick and simple and thus far everything looks good.

i was a big fan of the teac hd but have had 4 calls in two weeks on this same problem i sent an email to teac and they sent me a message back saying
the c.100 this is a startup error inside the unit and would have to be returned to be repaired so there must be a problem in the unit that will not allow the unit to start
i have used countless amounts of these and hope not to many more go down

Just woke up to the C1.00 error this morning.
How long is the Teac warranty 12 months i suppose as the box is 13 months old.

Well to answer my own question 12 months it is.

Email from Teac as follows

The Warranty period is 12 months for the Set Top Box.
If you are outside this period,we offer a fixed price repair cost on digital boxes of $55.00 inclusive of parts and gst.
:)
not had the c1.00 error on mine as yet. mines jsut worked a treat so far. will keep fingers crossed !

lungy where did you buy your box from? i know some retailers will help you push a wty claim if you ask nicely i have seen this done once or twice.

Bought from Kmart im going to try them first if no luck will be fronting the counter at Teac asking nicely to waive the fee.

I contacted TEAC Australia via email and received a polite email advising that I take my DVB800 unit to the closest repair centre. I am located in Melbourne so went to TEAC in Tullamarine, where they fixed the problem in 15min for $55.00....which was just the labour cost. The guy there told me that the problem was with the power supply...he 'replaced the caps in power supply'...whatever that is. He also updated the firmware so I now have active USB ports which are conveniently located at the rear of the unit. Apparently I can now use the active ports to play MP3's and view JPG's. The unit is working fine now (it's only been a week), so I'll keep my fingers crossed.

If you get the error it will most likely require a repair. TEAC know how to fix it (as they fixed mine in 15min when I took it to their repair centre). If yoy experience the problem go back to the store where you purchased it asap.

I have had this problem with my unit. It is a problem with the power supply. It will require a repair to fix it. If you are still within the warranty period (or perhaps a little outside the period) go back to the store asap and get them to fix it for you. If you are way outside the warranty period (as I was), go to your nearest TEAC repair centre and they will fix it...it took 15 min to fix mine.

Bugger,

I just got home to find the C1.00 on the display - and I'm just over 14 months since purchase.
Looks like it's a very common occurance and I'm really hoping that we don't have to pay a $55 repair every 12 months....

Very annoyed and this kind of incident will lead me to avoiding purchasing Teac for good now.

Hi All.

I have also discovered the C100 error and got no satisfaction from Teac's Customer Service Manager. He was a real dickhead. Consumer laws advocates that regardless of warranty, goods must be of merchantable quality. Obviously the DVB800 STB is not. I have written to NSW Department of Fair Trading and also to the CEO of Teac and copied these letters for you read. I would suggest you all write your own letters to your own state's Department of Fair Trading and to Teac's CEO. The fight has only just begun! I will keep you informed.

Letter to CEO

Dear Mr Toku-Shige,

I am writing to you to express my disappointment with the quality and reliability of my Teac Set Top Box and the poor response provided by your Customer Service Manager.

While, unfortunately, the matter has now been referred to the NSW Department of Fair Trading, I have decided to send you a copy (see attached) of the complaint for your information and feedback. I will continue to seek consumer satisfaction through the appropriate processes and I will never knowingly purchase a Teac product again.

Yours sincerely,"

" Department of Fair Trading

I purchased a Teac Set Top box (model DVB800) on 6 May 2005. It was Teac top of the range set valued at $459 and purchased for $359.

The set became faulty on the 6 October 2006, five months after the expiry of the warranty. I called the Teac Service Centre on 9 October 2006 and was advised that the error code C100 showing on the set indicated a power supply was faulty and a proper quote for repairs would cost $55.

I called the Dept of Fair Trading regarding the warranty and discussed the fact that the set was only five months past the warranty date and that goods purchased should be of merchantable quality and be expected to last a reasonable period. I was advised to discuss with issue again with Teac and if I was not satisfied, I could lodge a complaint.

I called Teac Service Centre again on 9 October 2006 and was advised only the Customer Services Manager could settle the matter and that an email would be sent to him to call me.

After not receiving any call back, I contacted the Teac Service Centre on 11 October 2006 and spoke to (I deleted the dickhead's name) and explained the situation to him. He was abrupt and arrogant and insisted that they are strict with warranty period and I was outside the warranty period. At this stage I asked for the Customer Service Manager and he revealed he was the Customer Service Manager. I doubted this, as he did not display any of the interpersonal or listening skills required of a senior manager. He did not want to listen to anything I had to say without interrupting so I terminated the call.

My points are:

1. I paid an expensive price for a "top of the range" set top box.
2. The set lasted only 17 months before becoming faulty, an extremely short period of time for electrical equipment to become faulty. I have had a Toshiba television set for 22 years which is used every day and is still working.
3. I believe goods must be of merchantable quality. 17 months usage would indicate that this set was not of merchantable quality.

Teac should replace the set with a new one free of charge or repair the existing model free of charge. "

Nice work Eagle, I wish you luck.

I too have just encountered the C100 bug and got a similar response from Teac. (My unit 15 months from purchase). I guess Teac just don't want customers, I too am leaving them behind and wont touch them anymore.

What a co-incidence last night my Teac 820 decided to bite the dust with a C.100 error also ... sad.gif

Luckily I still had the box with the reciept in it ... it's less than 12 months old so hopefully JB will give me no dramas. Intrestingly enough I recently put my XBOX 360 next to it ... I wonder if the issue is heat related cause that XBOX could heat a small town.... mmmmm.

Fingers crossed it doesn't happen again cause it's a good box otherwise.

Update on my 16 October 2006 posting.

I have received no response to my letter to the CEO (which says a lot for the customer mentality at Teac). I did get a call from Fair Trading today. They have spoken to the same Customer Service Manager I dealt with and he advised them that Teac have strict warranty rules as their products are made only to ensure they don't go defective during that period. What a dope to make such a statement. Obviously a great example of the Peter Principle (IE. promoted to a level (levels) above his level of competence).

Next step! Fair Trading is sending me forms to lodge a claim with the Fair Trading Tribunal. I will keep you informed.

Caps eah well i got home from work today to find mine flashing the C1.00

All the volt rails (5v, 3.3v etc...) on the crontrol PCA are pulsing so it would seem like a power supply problem i'll take it to work tomorrow and see if I can scope out the problem.

I've had this box for over a year - without any problems.
BUT I turn ALL my equipment off at the wall when I'm not using it.
I'm a Electronics Tech with 20 years experience & faulty Electrolytic Capacitors in Switch mode powers supplies is one of the most common faults.
I work on professional Audio & video equipment some of the power supplies in them cost more than some people spend on a wide screen TV but they still fail.
Heat normally dries out the capacitors & the supplies wont start.
Think about this - leaving a piece of equipment on for a year means that it will have run for 8700 hours.
If you run an Electrolytic Capacitor near it's rated temperature (usually 85degC or 105degC) then they can last for 4000hours - 6months.
If it's left on all the time in a cabinent with no ventilation then it maybe running near 60-70deg on the power supply.
Good luck to anyone getting more than 20,000 hours from any consumer equipment if it gets hot.
I don't even leave my toaster plugged in.
Rant over.

So what do you do if you have a PVR/VCR or other device that does unattended recording?

I'm sure not all capacitors are built the same, I have a 10 year old VCR still in use today that is only off when the power to the house goes off.

I don't have time to watch recordings so it doesn't bother me.
But I'd run it off another power point so I could leave it on & turn the rest off.

The main point is I was making was heat.
If you don't leave enough ventilation or there's bad power supply design or the caps are just speced to work then any additional heat will limit the life of the power supply.
I haven't looked at the Teac but I'd bet the caps are 85degC.

OK guys I took my unit to work today and a few caps had to be lifted to find wich one it was

turned out to be a 1000uF 16v near the big transformer and the regulator

my techo buddy in the service lab ended up replacing 3 x 1000uF 16v caps with 35v ones for reliabillity

also replaced 1 x 470uF 16v

5 x 220uF 16v

1x 1uF 50v
and 1x 33uF 50v

relpacing all the caps will give a long lasting repair :-)
considering I live and work in far east suburbs this saved me $55 and a trip to teac on the other side of the city.
I just owe a favour to my techo at work now :-)

good luck

Hi all,
Just a follow up on my warranty claim with Teac. JB took the unit back and after a couple of weeks I've got it back, the worked carried out section states:

"Replaced Caps in the Power Supply. Tested OK."

Hope they replaced the Caps with decent quality ones this time. I leave it near my XBOX 360 again that will test the temperature range of the Caps! wink.gif

Cheers,

Thanks for the information. For the price they charge for the STB, why didn't Teac use 1000uF 35V in the first place for better quality? They couldn't be that much more expensive with their bulk purchasing power.

I followed the same avenue with a defective samsung product....that was still in warranty! Eventually i got the same resolution as you.

I've found that its now almost impossible to speak to senior managers through the telephone. At samsung they wouldn't even put a supervisor on the phone....how ridiculous is that?

Hi All,
My Teac HDB820 died last night, no power outs or spikes. It just decided to display the BOOT message for 10 minutes after being switched on. I did the usual, turned it off and disconected it from the mains for a few minutes, still displayed the BOOT thingy. Turned it off for several hours then got the dreaded C1.00 message. Now thats all it displays.

Bought this from JB in July of this year. For some stupid reason I thought it might last a bit longer than a few months, silly me. Now I will need to go through the usual Bovine Excrement just to get it repaired. Once I do get it fixed it's going on E-Bay. Should have spent the extra and got a reputable one.

1. Turn power off
2. Depress the power-button on the main unit and hold it;
3. Turn power on, will get "----"
4. release power-button
5. Wait one hour.
6. Watch HDTV.

Hi Alex,

1. Turned power off
2. Depressed the power-button on the main unit and held it;
3. Turned power on, did get "----"
4. released power-button
5. Waited one hour (give or take a couple of mins.).
6. Couldn't Watch HDTV.

Still displays BOOT for many, many minutes, and if it turn it off then back on I still get the dreaded C1.00 error message.

I have already talked to JB, they said this has happened before and that I should bring it in and they will send it back to TEAC. Not even 5 months old and dead already.

Never do this as you will undo the earlier wait.

In my case, and I've owned 820 for longer than most (all?) of you guys and this has happenned to me many many times before. Invariable, after seeing "boot" for about an hour, all comes good.

I don't believe it's anything to do with power or capacitors and everything to do with faulty firmware (if I wanted to guess, I'd say it's to do with the time acquisition from broadcast, but I have no grounds).
RezoN_8
Thanks Alex.
I will go through it again today and see if turning it on with the remote helps.

The C100 fault in the Teac set top box relates to a fault in the power supply.
To correct the problem replace the three 1000 uf / 16 v capacitors on the power
supply board. Ensure they are the correct type, and installed in the correct polarity.
This applys to Teac model HDB820 . smile.gif It works, I have fixed many...

Hi All,
Alex, I tried with step 4.5 included but still no luck, thanks anyway. Darrall, I would love to try replacing the capicitors but I'm not sure if I have the right sized hammer biggrin.gif .

I still can't believe the unit has failed after only a few months. I will be returning it to JB as they said they would send it back to TEAC. It's well within warranty so I don't need to worry about trying to repair it myself.

I'm even thinking of getting another one so I can make a nice pair of novelty shoes for an up coming fancy dress party I am going to (SciFi theme).

Hmmm, I've just had this problem with my HDB820.

I bought some 1000uf caps from Jaycar this morning on the way into work and have just changed them but it didn't fix the problem sad.gif

I haven't got an antenna signal at work but I'll try the leaving it on boot for an hour when I get home tonight...
If this works how often can I expect to be doing this ? Is it worth sending it back under warranty or will this just happen again ?

Thanks,

Matt.

mcaves,
Don't quote me, but I think if you have pulled it apart and put in new caps you may have blown your warranty. If it is faulty the best thing to do is send it back.

Or, alternatively, drive a stake through it's tiny (black) electronic heart, build a small fire in your backyard, burn it, stomp on the ashes, bury it and pretend you never bought it in the first place.

Hi All,
I have just got my HDB820 back from JB (via TEAC), and guess what, capacitors replaced on the power supply.

I must admit I was surprised at how quick I got the unit back, I wasn't expecting to get it back for a month or so, couple of brownie points for TEAC there methinks.

I had a busy weekend so I have not been able to test it and make sure it's OK, but I will tonight.

Not really, a faulty design is the stuff recalls are made from. Not even a notice on their web-site.
Teac knew that these boxes are faulty from factory but still sell them in hope that not too many people complain or bother to return/warranty-claim.

Rant over.

This sounds a bit strange, last time I checked a toaster is a wire with a switch - how does unplugging it make it last longer? Maybe you should be unplugging your light globes too or turning your house off at the mains to make the wires last longer? rolleyes.gif

How do you explain the typical lifespan operation of a VCR, TV, microwave, clock radio or hi-fi, all that can be reasonably be expected to run 24 hours a day for 15-20 years and beyond? what about the old CRO that's probably been sitting on your bench for the last 20 years or so, happily running 8-10 hours a day?

Eletrolytic capacitors should have a lifespan of around 100k hours at 85 deg C, not 4000 as you suggest. Assuming they run at temperatures below 85 degress they will last much longer. Remember that 85 degrees is about the temperature of scalding water - not many pieces of consumer equipment run that hot, even in a cabinet.

I think you will find the problem is more related to incorrect derating of the capacitors used in the curcuit. 1000uf 16v is way too low for a 12v supply rail - as a rule of thumb capacitors should be derated by a factor of two meaning on a 12v supply rail the electros should be rated at 24v or above. As electro's voltage ratings are typically 16v or 35v the appropriate choice is the 35v device in this application.

Josh.

P.S. Having the same problem on my dvb820 - what a piece of sh*t it is - I will never buy Teac again. I can't believe that the 800 had the same problem and they couldn't be bothered to fix it on the 820 despite fitting a new power supply! That's a culture of bad engineering.

P.P.S When my non-technical freinds ask advice on a STB/PVR the first thing I say is "whatever you do do not buy Teac".

By the sounds of the customer service manager they have been briefed to behave this way too. What a great attitude - sell knowingly faulty equipment to the public then refuse to fix it one day out of warranty. angry.gif mad.gif

I bought one of these HDB820 HD STB's 3 months ago from JB.

3 months and 1 day later I now have the C1.00 error as well. Fortunately I only paid $260.00 for mine.

It's been a **** week in the house for Teac this week. Their brand name is worthless to me now. I had a Teac VCR that also decided to pack it in this week. Unfortunately this unit is out of warranty. I doubt I will replace it though as I barely use the VCR anymore.

Is the repairs Teac have been carrying out sufficient to ensure the box will work for an reasonable amount of time after it has been repaired? Are they replacing the capacitors properly or just patching it again to get it through the warranty?

fark i was just about to checkout on CotD but i searched for the model on these forums

i'm still tempted to get it tho due to the price and the fact that i haven't had a digital tuner yet!

u guys reckon the "renewed" units have had the capacitors replaced?

i just emailed them asking how much warranty they come with and how old the units are...

Just to balance things out a bit, I've had a Teac DVB800 for just over 2 years now.....never had a problem.

Cheers........Tex.

CoTD replied 2.5 hours AFTER the sale ended saying warranty is 3 months.

bit the bullet anyway and bought 2 with 0 minutes left.

Same here but given my luck with electronics I am expecting it to go any day now biggrin.gif .
