Hi Guys,
I came across this video on SED (marketing blurb) and thought people might be interested in it.

Regards,
Stephen

What are you drooling over?

I'm sure it looked good on an actual SED display, but that video looks shite!
mtv
That would have to be the worst quality promotional video I've ever seen, for a product that will eventually be a market leader.

That's what I thought too, pretty average to me....

The irony is though that you will need a SED display to actually appreciate how good it is meant to be laugh.gif

....But even that is mere theorie anyway because all this hype about how good it is is meaningless untill you can actually compare models in a store...something that is a long way off yet.

One interesting thing I just noticed.... headed over to the CAV website, and it was saying that at CES Rab reckoned the new 65" Sharp Aquos looked better than anything else, including the SED display. hmmm, interesting.

At CES, they didn't see a production-model SED display... what they saw was a tiny prototype that's no where near what the end product could be like.
Owen
Other then black levels, what advantage does SED offer over competing technologies????

I am not aware of any meaningful information on other aspects of video performance, and since know one has seen a full size production example, we can only speculate.

Don’t get too worked up about SED until we get some feedback on a production model.

SED will be the solution to every problem we've ever encountered. It will make all previous displays obsolete and will be a testament to man's superiority over nature. It will be the second coming.

Seriously though, while it may be a good technology, I'm sure we all remember the hype around plasma, then LCD. When plasma first came out it was the greatest thing the world had ever seen. You could hang your TV on a wall like a painting! Then the flaws started to be revealed and like everything else we got used to it.

I'm sure we'll find SED has flaws, and if anything again it's not so much the actual display technology which is at issue, it's the digital processing behind it which will determine the true image quality for most intents and purposes. I imagine that most manufacturers will probably skimp in that regard (due to the high cost of the SED technology itself) to lower the overall cost of the set.

Agreed.

May have solved the colour and motion problems, but i wouldnt be surprised if it has black dead pixels or the colours detiriate in time.

Yeah, like $20,000 for a SD display!

Hi Guys,
As you all say, the video quality is not a great ad for SED smile.gif Another article I found with the video link was a few words from Canon saying that the Japanese SED launch had been delayed from mid year to the end of the year due to the SED plant not production ready yet. I guess these sort of things are expected with a new technology.

cheers,
Stephen

Dead pixels are quite possible, but the overall decay over time shouldn't be any worse than any current conventional CRT.

I just watched this on my IBM CRT monitor at the office.

Moving scenes were really jerky. Colours are poor. Very little contrast.

I hope that's just due to my network connection.

That video of SED is not an official promotion.
What you are watching is someone's hand-held video camera, and it's interpretation of an actual display. Then it is no doubt compressed for the internet.
And if I watch a video of a CRT projector on my LCD monitor, I am still watching an LCD monitor!
Let's judge them in person, when we get the opportunity.
Owen
At this stage it looks like we will not get an opportunity till 2008, and maybe never if things do not go well.
bobs
Nice one Alfred, was wondering how long it would take for someone to realise it's a handycam video that has been compressed for the web...

There is no way to judge SED from this footage.

That said, I want one now.

I drool because I believe....I NEED to believe!! rolleyes.gif
