I was just wondering if there are any technical differences in the meaning of the words 'upconversion' vs 'upscaling'.

Thanks

Lyle,

Have you tried a search on this for yourself?

Given many people say "search, search, search..." as a test, I searched on "upscaling upconversion" and the thread you linked to came up on page 7 of the search results. Note that both these words appear in both this thread and the one you linked to.

Even using "upscaling+upconversion" it was on page 6. While an improvement it seems an AND operator means little to the engine.

To get your linked thread on page 1 I needed to Search Titles Only, and again the AND operator did little because there were many hits above it without both words in the title.

Searching on this forum is problematic and until it's upgraded you (and other stalwarts) will continue to be annoyed by those you think don't search first (but probably do the best they can with the tool provided.)

When Google fails, wiki is usually the best place to look.

Sorry, I did not mean to sound annoyed. Please don't label me a stalwart, that is not a compliment I deserve. I have not been here long. (I joined the forum about the same time as you). And I have been roasted for not finding things and asking the question that was obvious to others when the search was done correctly. See my very early posts and you will see. cool.gif

However, I did do this search to find it - I searched on "upconversion" all by itself on TITLES not POSTS(!!). It was about the 2nd or 3rd thing that came up!! It took me maybe 20 seconds. Try it and see.

I agree the seaching is sometimes obtuse. (Coral disagrees with me). However, anything under 4 characters for instance fails. Searching on "what" fails. The trick I've found is to find the right keyword and keep it simple. Try searching titles first rather than posts. Then search within the thread for other, or the same, keywords.

Hope that helps.

This is another thing I'd like to see added to Alebonau's FAQ thread. ie, How to use the search engine correctly. Maybe it could be a topic on it's own or maybe it should be added to the help funtion. I'm sure the moderators could be talked into adding it if it was truly helpful.

Points taken Lyle. Just tried a few more, and Titles searches will be where I focus - will just have to get used to clicking the radio button. Maybe Coral can (and is willing to) change the default to Search Titles instead of Search Entire Post?

Hi. I had you and Orinion mixed up. Have edited my post accordingly. rolleyes.gif

Yes, I've wondered about that too. But there may be other times when the current default is better. I'm not sure which is best. I do seem to use Titles more often than Posts.

The other thing to be careful about is to watch what forum you have highlighted. Sometimes it's an advantage to be in the root directory, other times not. When searches fail the first time, I've learned to go back and check that.

Thanks for the replies, and my apologies for not finding the previous thread on this topic.
