I am wondering if anyone has had any luck hooking up a DVI STB to the Yammy 2600 via the HDMI input? I tried today, and I get no picture. I get sound ok (via optical out/in), but no picture. My STB (Hotchip 4000) works fine when I go DVI to HDMI (via adapter) direct to my TV HDMI input (Pioneer 506), but won't do the same through the HDMI input on the Yammy (I do manage to get a picture if I remove the HDMI and replace it with composite).

The Yammy manual says that DVI to HDMI will work, but I've had no luck. I bought my Yammy from Len Wallis Audio so thought they would be the experts, but their response was to send an email to Yamaha (I could have done that!).

Any thoughts?

Cheers,
Garry

Have you been into the setup in the receiver and assigned the STB input on the AMP to "own" one of the HDMI inputs ?

You have to tell the AMP what's connected to the HDMI input ports.

My TEAC DVB800 passes a signal via a DVI to HDMI cable to the AMP & then straight HDMI - HDMI cable to my AE700 projector. The image is still offset but that's the PJ's fault, but I do get an image ok.

Hi Garry

Im no specialist in these types of things... but i have a similar setup to you and i get a picture no problems.

I have a strong HD SB, yammy 2600 and the pioneer 436.

The Strong connects to the yammy via a DVI to HDMI cable. I needed to first set up the box using analoge cables (svideo or rca) and when the box tuned itself automatically, i then changed the menu settings in the box to show that i wanted to use the DVI connection. I connected the DVI-HDMI cable to HDMI 1 input on the yammy and then in the yammy menu settings, told it that a HDMI connector is connected for the STB.

It worked first time for me.

If you are still having problems, try changing the resolution on the yammy to 576p or i or 720p or i. Im no expert as i said and this may not work, but give it a shot.

Also, i have a slight problem when viewing foxtel through my yammy. The picture appears slightly "Vertically" stretched (as in people look thinner). Its very slight, but it is defilnately there. if you don't get this with your foxtel, can you post back or PM me with your results.

Good luck.

I think it all depends on the implimentation of DVI on these STB. Corners may be cut...
Why dont you bring your STB to LWA and get them to try it for you?

Thanks for the advice. I tried again tonight... first by assigning the HDMI input 1 and then HDMI input 2 in the Yammy, but no luck (I can successfully output Component and Composite from the Yammy via the HDMI output, so I know that the cable is ok, and that the output works. I also tried the other resolutions (576p, 720p)

The STB is definitely outputting via DVI, as I am currently watching it connected directly into the TV's HDMI input.

I think your suggestion of taking the STB to LWA is probably a great idea.

As for your Foxtel issue... I don't have any issues here. I first had Foxtel connected via Scart to composite, and now via Scart to component, setting the Foxtel output to component (YUV). I should probably mention that I have the Foxtel IQ box... not sure if I that makes a difference. TV's set to Full Aspect, and Foxtel is set to 16:9 (and 14:9 for 4:3 broadcasts). I'm outputting everything from the Yammy via component to the plasma (until I get the HDMI thing worked out - only one HDMI input on the plasma, and I couldn't bear giving up the HDTV PQ).

I noticed that the Yammy (in GUI-Manual Setup-Video) can alter HDMI aspect to either Through or 16:9. How is yours set?

I managed to reproduce your "vertically stretched" problem by setting the TV's aspect to Zoom, Cinema, 4:3 and Wide when watching both 16:9 and 4:3 broadcasts. Have you tried setting the TV to Full? The Pioneer is smart enough to remember your aspect preference for each input, so maybe that input is set to something other than Full, but your other inputs are set correctly, so they don't have the same problem.

I'm no expert either... I've only been playing with the new setup for about 2 weeks, so still much to learn!

Let me know how you go...

Garry

Hi Garry

i have tried all of that from setting the pioneers aspect ratio, to changing the yammy's aspect ratio. I too have scart to component, and then am going via hdmi to hdmi into the tv. i don't have IQ though.

It only happens with foxtel...every other signal is fine. changing the tvs aspect ratio to cinema and zoom does not yeild the same results that i am getting. Those settings cut of parts of the picture, whereas my issue does not. i see the full frame.

the best way to describe it, is when viewing a pillarboxed program ( a digital 4x3 program with black bars down the sides to make it 16x9) there seems to be too much width on the black bars.

you said it best.. "still much to learn!"

Thanks for your post
