Hi All
Anybody got feedback on the Tevion high definition STB Aldi had on sale recently at $299? Our local outlet has one remaining for $50 off, which seems a good buy to me. I'm looking to upgrade our Toppie T300F.

Any other feedback on using a HD unit on an 8 year-old television set?

Many thanks Beeblebrox - you've saved me a lot of folding and frustration.

Your TV probably has a composite input (Yellow RCA) or an S-Video connection. The HD STB will work, but it will downconvert HD to SD. There is some argument that Hd downconverted to SD looks better on an Sd screen than just SD, however on an 8 year old 50Hz CRT in 4:3 I assume, you wouldn't see any diff. So the HD box you are looking at will work, but unless your getting a nice new 100Hz 16:9 CRT, or a plasma or LCD, then you'd be better off just getting a cheap SD box with composite and s-video, or even SCART out to composite as some of these will do a RGB signal. Of course you would then need a component input though.

The Tevion SD stb is sold for under $100- now (when in stock) and would save you a few bob. Had mine for over a year now (hooked up to a 20 year old Sanyo) and they work great.

I brought home one of these tevion HD STB's prior to christmas, could not get it to work at all, got a replacement only to find that the only way to get any kind of picture was out of the 15pinD and the pic was all green. Got my money back.

This quote is from a whole post of mine, that referred to a chap who had an 8 year old 4:3 CRT. What I said is true. it will work on his screen if he has a composite input or s-video. If you were using the VGA output I assume you were using a monitor/CRT that has a VGA input and can display HD signals. If it came up in green, you need to swicth the output from component to VGA, otherwise it will be green...

Take it from me, i've had a few Tevion products in the past dvd players, crt monitor, dvd players, standard stb...never had any troubles with any of them then i decided to buy the HD STB since it was only $199 a month or so ago because they were trying to get rid of the last few. This was at the time i got my new plasma so i thought i'd give it a go since it was at a "bargain" price. Not only did it hardly scan ANY channels at all (i think it might of found 2 all up!) the actual picture quality through component was pathetic to say the least. The remote was screwed up, wouldn't even work properly had to go right next to the stb to get it working! (and that was after changing batteries btw)

My advice is spend a bit more money on a better quality stb, i bought a Teac hdb820 for $350 from the good guys due to a bit of "research" on this forum and i've been pretty happy with it ever since.
