Hi all,

With an HD STB with HDMI output, how would I connect it to an home theater audio receiver? HDMI is capable of 8 audio channels, but it would still need a device to connect to.

With a single HDMI cable for both audio and video, how can it be split for the video to go into an HDTV TV, and for the audio to to go into the audio receiver? Or would an audio receiver have an HDMI output as well to connect into the HDTV TV?

Yes, the amp/receiver has an HDMI output to the tv. If you don't want video to pass through your amp, connect HDMI straight to tv and connect digital audio (optical or coaxial which the stb will have) to amp.

There's a limited number of receivers that will pass an HDMI signal...Yamaha 4600 and the about to be released 2600 are two I'm aware of.

Yes HDMI can process video and audio, however you'll need to check with the manufactures to determine which functionality they have implemented.

For example Pioneer 969 DVD has HDMI but (apparently) it's only implemented for video not audio.

HDMI also comes in anumber of versions some of which do video only, some do video and stereo sound some do video and surround sound.

There's oodles of discussions on HDMI....just search hdmi and have a read...

Wouldn't that defeat the purpose of HDMI ?

What format is the audio in?

It's to the media receiver for my plasma so I only get stereo.
