The 5400 has DVI. End of the day both send a digital video signal. Its not like you are really going to send digital sound through your tv (that's what digital amps are for).

At least you dont have to fire up your whole home entertaiment system to watch tv. You can watch with plasma speakers and have an HD image

That's what stereo interconnects are for (from stb to tv).

Going tonow get the 5400 for $500.00
Do you think it is worth waiting for the hdmi one. I heard that they aren't doing one with that. I dont have a home thearte system as yet, would it make that much difference having dvi instead of hdmi?

You are missing the point. HDMI IS ONE WIRE FOR AUDIO AND VIDEO.

Would you really want to spend $50+ on an HDMI cable based on the fact you can send a stereo audio signal to the tinny little TV speakers? A job which would sound no differemt if you used a $2 cable from the market.

And FWIW using caps is considered shouting and this isn't worth shouting about.

Thanks ajm, my point exactly.

If the stb you want to buy has HDMI, then fine. But if it has DVI like the strong 5400 I wouldn't not buy it just because of that. If you're sending all your video through your amp that might be a different story but I'm sure most people alredy have an optical cable from a previous stb (at least I will anyway).

Is it $500 now ? Same place ? I want it bad (the strong 5400 that is), sick of my dgtec.

I wouldn't worry about it not having HDMI. Like mentioned above, you don't have to use expensive audio cable to send the sound to the tv (use the ones that come in the box). If you get a tv with HDMI in the future, just get a DVI to HDMI cable (simple). Also, someone has mentioned in another thread that strong are not releasing a HD stb with HDMI and their HD pvr will also have DVI.

yeah $500 now, great price. Just bargain with your local dealer, tell him that you will buy one TODAY if he can do that price. If he won't go elsewhere.

Retravision in Caringbah quoted me $599 but still too much.
