Hello All,
Just got the Sony HD STB DSTHD500 but have found that it gets very hot. I run a Topfield PVR and a Yamaha amp that get no where near as hot. Does any one have the same issue?
Thanks

Did you run a search?

There's an IDENTICALLY titled thread asking for problem/bug reports.

In fact, it's currently on page 3.

Have you called Sony? Sony might just give you another unit if it is indeed running as hot as you say.

Rang Sony who suggested go back to where you purchased it from if with in 21 days - Tough to get technical help on the phone. I went back and discussed the heat problem with the floor manager where i purchased it and after looking at the display Sony and the display Toppy (Which the Sony is sitting on at home) he suggested to put the Sony under the Toppy due to the toppy having holes in the top of it. Tried this and it appears to have helped. Measured some temparatures and both units are running at about 40 deg on a warm day when both on and working.
Hopefully now ok.

Well, I waited for DJ's in Perth to deliver the Sony HSTHD500. I bought my Pana 42PV500A from them just over a month ago and the STB was on backorder. I wanted to make use of the HDMI. They gave me a Digitec HD804D in the interim. But that's another story.

I brought the Sony STB home. connected, etc and it would not even switch on - on standby mode only. Could not eneble the menu. Rang Sony the next day. They suggested I take it back to DJ's. (21 Day Policy).

I did. They gave me a new STB, no sweat. Connected hassle-free.

The remote is more user- friendly than the Digitec's. But the Digitec had a few more features such as display of all the channels in a window that one could browse. The STB had a switch at the rear to turn off/on, instead of the mains.

Frankly I think these boxes are over-priced, as they are seen as star-stuff. Not everyone has a Digital TV, you know. Also to makake it to the market ahead of the pack, they take short cuts in design and testing. Look out for firmware ugrades soon!

They should not cost > $100 in my humble opinion. wacko.gif

And oh, yeah! My Sony STB does heat up. But how much is too-much? And what are the implications? Will the PCB burn out?

More later folks...

Yes, a mate of mine bought his Bravia LCD that included the STB. Everything works fine from the word go...touch wood. But I have to say I don't like the 'very warm' operation of the stb. I compared to my LG STB and what a big difference. The sony is very warm. Since yours is also very warm, looks like it is a feature of sony.

Another thing, please correct me if I am wrong. The remote of the stb does not have the 'subtitle' or 'closed caption' button. That is annoying. How does one get clsoed caption when watching tv?

Other than that, I think the stb does give fantastic pq and sq.

Cheers.

Like you would with an analogue tv. Press the teletext button and press 801.

Thanks for that. I kept looking for a subtitle button on the remote and could not believe that it is not there... laugh.gif My friend will be most happy to know that.

Cheers.

Still watching the temperature but appears to be ok under the Toppy after checking it once a day for the last week.
Had a problem where SBS went blank, re-loaded all stations then SBS disappeared all together. Un plugged the thing from the mains for half an hour and then reset and re programmed all ok.
Am disappointed with SBS HD seems to be a very soft picture - Find SD (in Adelaide) better on the Sony or the Toppy.
Starting to agree with you on the value of these boxes, as wanted the 5.1 sound to the yammy and HD to the new viera, but its never broadcast!
Have i purchased one year too soon?
Waiting.... sad.gif

That's because SBS, as with the other 576p stations (ABC and Seven) do a very cheap BOB deinterlacing to get from 576i to 576p (or 1080i to 576p). You're only getting half the vertical resolution when you watch 576p, and it's worse if your display or STB deinterlaces it. It's even worse on HD STBs because some of them have the option to up-convert everything to 1080i. This can do very bad things to the source, making it much softer in appearance, though real HD (1080i) remains unaffected.

Hi, I bought Sony HD500, took it home, hook it up to my HD TV, colour is brilliant. However, it ran very hot, after 1.5 hours of viewing, it locked up nothing is working. Had to unplug the power and re-plug it to reset it. It locked up 3 times within 3 days. So I returned it and get another unit, the same thing happened again. In the end, I gave up and got my money back. By the way I bought it from the good guy @ $500. I called Sony tech help but was not helpful.

That is odd.. I have an older Sony HD STB (without HDMI) and it has never locked up after hours of use.. nor does it get hot.

Did you place anything on top of, below or around the STB whilst it was in use? Air ventilation always helps.

One thing for sure, I agree the previous Sony HD STB does not run as warm as the new HDMI model. In fact, having experience all other equipments, I find it ridiculous that the Sony HDMI STB should run this warm. It is actually very warm, almost hot but not too hot to touch. So far, my friend's STB has not lock up yet, thank goodness.

Cheers.

Your Being a bit harsh arn't you ? The other thread was indeed titled Sony DSTHD500 , more info please.

Whilst this one was titled Too Hot He was being specific I believe.

Should we have only 1 thread for each model TV/STB regardless of what the issues are?

Im glad he made the post as I was having a good look at a Sony DSTHD500 today at JB's.

It sounds far too hot to me

Thanks Turn It On

cheers

This may explain why the PQ of Lost on Seven looked worse through my LG 5100P HD stb than through my Supernet SD pvr. The HD picture did look soft, the SD was definitely clearer, though the colour was still better through the HD.

You say some HD stbs have the "option" to up-convert to 1080i and this causes the problem. If it is an option, does anyone know how I turn it off?

If it's anything like mine, just scroll through the output options... on mine, if I have the output set to 1080i, everything that isn't 1080i will be converted prioir to outputting to the display. Likewise, if I set it to 720p, 1080i will be downconverted and 5766p will be upconverted to 720p.

Thanks, I will try setting it to 576p when watching 7, 10 or SBS.

Regarding my one, the 576p setting sucks. It actually makes it more red/purple than the other settings, regardless of the channel. So keep that in mind.. who knows, yours might be better smile.gif
