Just wondering is there a way to get rid of unwanted channels.
Anyway is there a way for me to remove these stations?
Don't know if anyone else replied, but I get rid of the unwanted channels by having the unwanted channel displayed, and then manual tune, alter the frequency to something not used 100000 KC's and then retune to that.
Seems to remove the channel OK.

I have a DGTEC 5000I firmware dated 24/12/2003.
I am having a problem with audio on Ch9 Melb. More specifically with Dolby.
Watching the cricket today on the HD channel (90), I had no audio. Looked at the audio pop up display, it showed that both Dolby and MPEG were available. Select MPEG and its OK. Back to Dolby, no audio. After retuning the channel, I lost audio on both Dolby and MPEG. Went to 9, Dolby and MPEG OK, checked 91, MPEG showed as being available, but no audio. Checked 99, same no audio at all.
Retuned again, and I was back to the original problem. 9 OK on both Dolby and MPEG, 90 no dolby but MPEG ok, 91 MPEG OK, 99 MPEG OK. When switch from channel to channel, and selecting 90, I hear an audio "scratch", like as if its tried to decode the audio and can't.
I had noticed a similar problem during football broadcasts as well. I assume its when the Multi - view channel is added.
Does anyone have any comment? Similar problem? Can anyone get Dolby on ch 90 at the moment while the cricket is being played?
Is anyone still using one of these boxes, I see there haven't been any posts for sometime.

I have A DGTEC5000 about 6 weeks old and sofar I havn't had any audio problems yet. The only problem I have had is that yesterday I couldn't get HD9 ,I could only get SD.That seems to have fixed itself just now.So maybe it was a problem with ch.9. My unit does get quite warm when it is in standby mode.

I think "standby" is a misnomer.
I know that it will still pick up the network time to keep the time clock in sync when in standby. So its receiver is still being powered.
It will also put audio out of the optical port when in standby. This is intermittent.
I.E. go to standby, listen to the device you have plugged into the fibre. No noise, anytime after 5 minutes or so the audio appears. So it seems there is some glitch in the audio processing.
BTW, what is the f/w build and date of yours

I have had my box for about 5 weeks & havent came across any problem like those suggested in this forum.
I have foubd it to be a really good STB that produces crisp sound & picture.
Only bad comment I have is the heat that it produces even when in standby due to it still recieveing signals to keep the clock on time. It gets very warm especially in the hotter weather Melbourne has just had over the past few days.

Dec 24 2003
And just to get a little more irrelevant info, from the Latrobe Valley (Mt Tassie), when I look at the HD loop from WIN ch # 80, I see both Dolby and MPEG shown as being presented in the Audio menu, if Dolby is selected, great space of nothing is heard, but MPEG is OK.
This is a permanent situation.

Hi guys, My information is the same as Grampus except after Dec. 2003 is15:02:29.
With your Dolby problem - to get Dolby Digital sound you have to connect the set top box to a digital amplifier with a fibre-optic cable. I think that is the only way you will get Dolby Digital sound - this is how my system is set up for Dolby Digital sound.
Hope this is of some help.

Thanks for the follow up.
It seems that MPEG is the only audio broadcast on ch #80 WIN in the latrobe valley, as I was advised in another forum topic. So thatw as one of my queries/concerns ticked.
As to the presentation of audio, my DGTEC is connected to the Phillips screen by Left / Right RCA jacks, and will deliver whatever is selected as just L/R.
For the optical out connected to a Panasonic amp, it will deliver what is selected, and delivered in the broadcast.
Once again, thanks for the follow up.

Hi all.
I've had a 5000I for just over 12 months now, connected to a Sony KVHR36M31 86cm widescreen HD CRT TV and a Sony STRDB2000 reciever amp for the noise bit.
I've been happy with the box all that time, except that about 2 months ago I had a reception problem with it (kept getting 'loss of signal'). I talked with DGTEC and eventually it went back to them, had a tuner upgrade and it now works very well again - all done at DGTEC expense, than you DGTEC. I've had no significant other problems with sound or vision and am a happy user.

Do you guys think it is worth the upgrade from 2000a to 5000 ??
I have had the 2000a for almost a year now and was feeding it to a CRT PJ until i sold it a few weeks back.
What is the main differences between the two ??
I know 5000 comes with PIP which might be handy.
AT work, we are dumping them at $249

and going to find out today if there is a mistake on the pricing

I wouldn't bother, Ive got one and just bought a Teac.
Much better pq and plenty of outputs.
Changes channels better , runs cooler.
And they even let you update the firmware yourself

Brad57, I have the DG-5000i connect to a Pioneer 50" plasma and am in Brisbane and all works fine, no lockups at all. Sorry I can't offer anymore help than that.
Widemouth, mine only got very hot when I had another component (plasma media box) on top of it, effectively blocking the top ventilation holes. I now have it all alone and it is fine, even in the hot weather we have had in QLD this week.
KJG
KJG,
Thanks for the reply, I rang the DGTEC support this morning and the person I spoke to wasn't concerned about the heat output even in standby mode. He informs me that even in standby mode it is still receiving the digital signals mainly to display the clock on the front.
I think I still need to install a couple of fans into the cabinet to cool things down.
I wouldn't of though that an electronic device should run that hot. Its hard to judge the actual temperature but I can't leave my hand on the top RHS of the box for any longer than 10 seconds without risking burns!!
Does anyone know of a switched power board or something that can be controlled from a remote? The Set top Box is now another device in the cabinet that uses a s**t load of power when in standby mode. It would be nice to be able to cut the power to these devices somehow without having to get behind the unit and turn them off at the wall.
Thanks in advance.

If you have a learning remote it should be a simple matter of slipping into Dick Smith's etc and picking up a "X10" configured switch. set the remote up to turn the X10 on and off and you have what you want.
Hope this helps

Hi All,
I have been reasonably satisfied with the 5000i apart from the odd problem that I have been able to rectify, but recently I have had a new issue:
The unit has slow and poor response to the remote. I have not spent alot of time on it yet, but I thought I would post here to see if anyone else has had the same thing. I use a Sony programmable remote that could be the problem, but I have used this all the time I have had the 5000i with no problem bfore recently. I programmed it when I first got the 5000i, and it has worked well since... until a couple of weeks ago. Now I have to be within a few metres of the 5000i with the remote facing straight at it to get any response from the remote. Often when it does respond, it then processes multiple button presses. I suspect the problem is the 5000I, but I will search through the cupboards to get the original remote to try it. My programmable remote controls everything else as it always has, and I have replaced the batteries in it with no change in results. I guess I will have to work out if the response is the same with the original remote, but I suspect it will be, so I am just posting here to see if anyone else has had similar problems. I have been using the 5000I since Jan 2003, so over 2 years of use now with only minor problems before now.

The 5000i does have a slow response time.its not like a couple of minutes its more like a couple of seconds.its an issue with the software,i have spoke to the tech's at DGTEC and have even taken my box in,they have showed me that its just the way the software was designed..
the people are very helpful at DGTEC,you people may not believe me but try being friendly with their support team and dont just call up and say my box is stuffed i want a new one..
if your patient with them they will help you with all your STB problems..

It is a hardware problem with mine. It now nolonger responds to the remote at all. I have tested the output of the infrared sensor in the front, and it was nothing until you were quite close before (when it was working), and now it is nothing all the time. I have located a replacement sensor and will attempt to replace it myself since I work in electronics and it is out of warranty. Would be nice to have schematics for the thing, but I suspect it is just the sensor since it was range dependant initially.

Adrianvos, did you manage to sort out your problem mentioned here? Ours has now thrown the teddy out of the cot and the remote won't work at all. Even when I unplugged it for about an hour, it still fired up without asking me to re-scan the channels.
The funny part is that I can get to the menus via the buttons on the front, but can't enter the password
Options are either using it for a sea anchor or sending it to DGTEC support, altough it is out of warranty now.

I would send it back to DGTEC. I replaced the infrared sensor, and turned it back on and it did nothing!! Turned out the power supply had died, but it was able to run once on, but could not start up again, so turning it off to do the work resulted in it not being able to start up. I rang DGTEC, and they quoted $88 for a new power supply plust $20 delivery back to my place, and I payed $20 buck to send it to them... so for $128 it is repaired and I set it up last night, and it is all working. I have no idea whether the infrared sensor that was in it was a problem... It turns out when the power supply goes it is the 5V supply to the sensor that goes first.
Anyway, it is all working now, and $128 is not too bad. I considered using it as an anchor, and buying another cheap SD STB, but as it turns out, it was cheaper to go this way anyway... as long as it does not let go again anytime soon. I have repositioned the STB where it gets better ventilation, so hopefully it will last this time.

Hi all, am new to this forum.... but I've just purchased a DGtec 5000i and found some annoying problems. This one doesn't seem to be experienced before... or I couldn't find it. When I connect up the two audio cables to the unit and Tv (incl video cable via RCA cables) the sound is quite low. Even when I turn up the volume on full on the DGtec unit it is still low compared to the TV when I switch it over. When i remove one of the audio connections the sound actually comes through better and the volume change from the tv to the Dgtec unit isn't too bad. Rang tech support but had no idea. The unit has a date of Aug 2003 for the software. Any ideas why the sound is poor with both RCA plugs in. I have played around with the menu settings but with no luck. Thanks

Not sure why the sound is low, probably for amplification by an amp, so when there is a large increase in sound (i.e. some stations advertising changes) your speakers don't blow. Try changing the sound stream to a different format... As for the louder sound when you only have one in, this sounds like all the "charge" is going into the one connector... when did you buy this box though mate, and where? You really would be best to return this box asap and get something else. We call these the "footy" as some have kicked 'em through 2 poles

I recently had a problem with the remote on my 5000i becoming unresponsive. Holding the button down would eventually work, but then sometimes the selected button would stick. I replaced the batteries but there was no improvement.
Then a few weeks later a message appeared saying 'Weak Signal'. An hour or so later I got no signal at all. I checked the TV reception without the STB and got great reception.
I unplugged the STB and plugged it back in, but this time it said the program database was empty. I tried scanning for channels but it could not find a single channel.
I spoke to DGTEC support and they suggested I first do a firmware reset: Menu -> Installation -> Pin (0000) -> Reset Data -> select Yes, wait a minute an power down (unplug) for 30 minutes. I plugged the power back in and scanned for channels again. This time it found all the channels and my remote was responsive again.
Strange, but at least it's working again.

So far so good. Everything is working fine for me.
The tech support guy was a bit vague, saying is was caused by 'accumulated software glitches' and that all their set top boxes need a firmware reset every six months... My guess would be that it is some sort of memory leak in the flash RAM.

Seems like these boxes have a common fault. My remote doesn't respond AT ALL now and I want to Reset Data, but I can't! I think it's time to get a new STB anyway, but I don't want to throw this one out just because I can't type '0000' into the installation screen!
Anyone know how to get around this one?
PS: I can see the LCD display flickering everytime a remote code is sent to it, so it's receiving the codes, just choosing not to do anything about them.

I opened up my 5000i last night and there's a strange intermittent buzzing coming from the power supply board. The fact that it's not a constant hum has me intrigued. The +33V line to the mainboard is not working and one of the triacs has obviously got extremely hot due to the black colour on the PCB surrounding it (Still seems to work though). I can't locate what component is humming, but one of the smaller capacitors is bulging something shocking. Might try and fix it one day, but for now I want a PVR.

Happy with my 5000i - trouble-free for me at least. Remote could be better tho.
Q. Does anyone have a recent firmware upgrade and can they describe the installation of it.
My firmware is dated Sept 03 and I believe the newer firmware is worth the upgrade.
I am a computer tech so should be able to do this if someoen can provide the info.
Re. the overheating some of these models show - mine does does not exhibit this, and from what I have read here I think it's definitely due to a problem (ie failure) in the PS. Burnt circuit boards are bad. If I had it I would be straight back to DGTEC as imo it represents an unacceptable fire risk - apart from being a fault.
But any help with the firmware would be great. Post here or email me if you like.

My guess is that it's set to record to a PC - ie it's expecting to find a path to a pc hard drive as the recording device, rather than the internal hard drive.
I would read the manual carefully - looking at the recording options (internal versus external). Or contact the Company if it's new (or previous owner if it's not). Other than that if it's s/h it might be a fault in the hard drive or firmware.
Someone with that model should know.
Try posting under PVRs - this thread is for a DGTEC 5000i set top box (ie a particular tuner model - without a hard drive). B)

Wow - a little problem arose with my DGTEC 5000i
Normally it runs fine and stays cool - just warm to touch when turned off (ie in standby).
But today it got quite hot here about 35C so I thought I would check it - it had got hot - damn hot.
I would go further and say there is a problem with heat dissipation in the PS.
I told my wife to keep it off until I research it further - my "research" was to hunt for a decent ballbearing fan that I'll fit before it used again. I reckon the round holes in the top are too small, and the slots on the bottom are too few. Bad design looks like to me. When I opened it the other day the PS was quite large - just why so big I wondered - since there were no moving parts.
I wonder if anyone has fitted a fan - I somehow seem to recall reading just that.
Should it be a 5v or 12v type?
Anyone done this already, and can advise further on what type and where they connected it to on the PS board?
Thanks,
Stan

Can anyone tune in to ABC's HD channel and get a 720 picture on a DGTEC 5000i. I know that ABC went the 1280x720 HD route but whenever I try it, ( for instance for Planet Earth on Sundays) I only get 1080i. If I change the format it goes staticy on the 720p and then back to normal on 576p and PAL.
I haven't updated the software etc since I bought it

I have purchased a HOTCHIP 6000HD set top box and I already have a Samsung LCD TV (without HD). The salesman advised me to get this machine so that I could HDMI. It required purchasing a cable that had two different connections. One the typical screw in type and the other like a USB port connection. I have connected everything up and I turned the macine on and it keeps saying, 'No signal,' however if I take the cable out, it reads 'Unable to find signal.' What do I need to do??????

G'day Richard,
Same here whenever I try to tune in 720P on the ABC HD with the 5000i. Does the ABC transmit in 720P all the time or only when such shows as Planet Earth are being telecast.
Cheers,

How did you get on Stan with the extra heat? After 3 years the power supply board on my 5000i died. Rang DGTEC about a replacement, $70 later it's up and running again.
They have a new revised board which seems to have cured all the past overheating problems. The interesting thing is that the front right hand side of the box is now warm where the heat before was mainly right rear.
Fairly easy job to replace the board, the only tool needed was a phillips head screwdriver.

Hi Guys,
i have a DGTEC, not sure if its a 5000. my question relates to HDTV signals. they seem to be low quality when compared with an x264 movie which is crystal clear. It seems that any show broadcast in HD here, ads etc are very grainy and also work much like VCD/MPEG videos do, lots of artifacts especially when the camera is moving.
I thought that a digital signal would be pixel perfect but it seems to be severly compressed?!? its much better than watching analog tv but still no where near as good as 720p movies of tv eps
i have a 40" sony bravia S series (1360x768). The set top box is connected to the LCD TV via a HDMI cable. I run my computer on this, games, windows, movies etc are pixel perfect.
is it my receiver or signal in perth? i live in Victoria Park. even when you see HDTV in the shops like JB HiFi, its still not as clear as i thought it would be.

This clock projects the time, date, or temp on the wall or ceiling
http://www.liangdianup.com/clocks_1.htm some people call
it a ceiling clock but I call it a digital projection clock. I got the black one because at the time that was the only color
they had. But now they have them in black and also in white.

I had a DGTEC 5000i HD/SD box that wouldn't lock channels in properly.
I had 2002 software loaded/ contacted DGTEC in Melbourne 22 December.
That afternoon a courier rang to pick the unit up ( at their expense )- they
did a software update SEPT 2003 version - returned the unit by courier express ( again at their expense) on 6/01/04. ALL digital services are rock solid in pulling the signal in now and look great. I must admit I was VERY impressed by the service. THANKS DGTEC - WELL DONE.
I bought a Lennox model: HDS - 200. The info book says very little. I cannot get it to search and find the channels. All it finds are various versions of SBS.
Can anyone help me with instructions. Also the remote for the stb keeps switching off the stb and sending me back to the TV.
Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this ? I am new at this.

I bought my DGTEC 5000i in early 2003 from DJ's in the City of Sydney, (for about $1000 at the time)
It used to green screen & freeze as I remember it, so a couple of months layer it was returned to the manufacturer to be fixed,
after a month, or so waiting, I was given a replacement New STB (un-opened)
& I can report, that I am still using it to this day without any problem.
