Hi All,

Few questions I want to ask about getting a plasma

1. What's best between the price 2-$3k budget
2. life span? scariest fact...
3. what are the 3 important things you should look for in a plasma?

thanks

Bought the new Samsung PS42D5SX SD Plasma TV recently, very happy with it no problems so far. See at HN, Myer & Retavision stores, looks great with black Bezsel around screen. RRP $3299 on special $2999, paid $2780 after haggling,

2 years warranty, bought 2 at same time (one daughters wedding gift!) Retra Syd, H Turner. don't know if they will do same price though.

Its a beauty for the price no porbs yet like previous model.

Yeah I bought the same Plasma myself....paid around $2900 with STB and leads from retravision (Melb). Very happy with the Plasma thus far! Came with the 2yr warranty with optional to increase to 5 yrs. biggrin.gif

I saw a 42" NEC SD (great picture) with STB for around $3,300 at Instyle Hifi in Five Dock, Sydney ......

The NEC has a fantastic picture for the price......

Cheers,

I work for a large retailer selling panels ( i wont say which so this is not an add) and can honestly say forget samsung and lg, pay the extra couple of bucks for the nec, by far the best panel on the market. In fact i just bought mine this week! biggrin.gif

I've only had my new model PS42D5SX Samsung plasma a few weeks and its peforming A1 so far. I said I wouldn't buy Samsung products after a bar frifdge packed up 1 month after warranty ran out some years ago (they still replaced it though), bought a new twin door Samsung with icemaker 18 months ago and its the best one we have had out of 2 other brands.

AndrewWilliams
Excuse my ignorance, but are all plasmas in that sort of price range 480 lines ? i.e. less than SD?
Ryan
Yes Andrew that is correct.

I still can't find fault with my new Samsung PS42D5SX (SD) Plasma, sure it needed color adjustment OTB but they all do, real nice thin remote, but I've programed this into the Harmony 680. Its a nice bit of kit with the black screen surround. Think they have fixed the problems had with previous model.

I have been quoted the NEC VM5W at $3000 which is the Jap model however it doesnt come with speakers or built in tuner.

The NEC PXT 42S11S ,cheap model, as you put it is all salesman BS. The screen is exactly the same however it has been assembled in Korea and apparently has more features than the Jap model.
Both have a 3 year warranty.
Dont be fooled into believing the Jap model is far superior. It isnt.
In fact I think the reason why the salesmen have used this pitch is because they are finding it hard to shift the non tuner and nonspeaker models.
Most consumer dont want the hassle of hooking tuners and speakers up and would rather plug and play.
For the Tech Heads its a different story but the Japs I think here have missed their target audience by offering the extra features.
Having read many reviews about the NEC screens, they all pass with flying colours.
I have also read that the SD is just as good as the HD and not worth the extra dollars.

You be the judge!

IMO some people like speakers on a plasma panel like me who doesnt have an auidio system to hook up to it and obviously there are those who dont require them at all but in terms of a tuner if you dont run a STB on a plasma even a $89 one you are wasting your time.In other words if a plasma had or didnt have a tuner this would not mean a thing to me.

I bought the NEC VM5W model from Quantum Sphere for $2680.
Yes you do need a set-top box / tuner and speakers but if you are going Dig TV anyway and have some sort of system I think it is very hard to beat so long as your viewing distance is such that SD gives no flyscreen effect.

Couldn't be happier with it off the end of the AUSID box and Pioneer 969 DVD player.
