I can think of one good reason. People will try to flash the firmware, stuff their unit and scream that they want it replaced under warranty. If I was a manufacturer of a low end product I wouldnt want potentially clueless people messing with it.
One word: DISCLAIMER!
Companies such as Strong, Pioneer, Topfield etc etc have absolutely no problem with supplying updated firmware for people to flash in to their gear. The firmware usually comes with a disclaimer that you use it at your own risk.
If the Wintal's firmware wasn't supposed to be updated by the end-user, there wouldn't be an RS-232 port on the back (and mentioned in the manual).
And by the way, the company that designed the hardware and software, Digenius, has no problem with supplying downloadable firmware for their customers either.
