Recently purchased an LG RT-42PX11 PDP and have noticed solarisation (colour banding) right out of the box. Noticable on skin tones especially.

...Anyway after looking at other panels in the stores (LG, NEC, Samsung, etc) couldn't see them performing so badly. Got the number of the repair people and booked in for them to come out to look at it.

Problem is I'm not 100% sure it isn't just the panel, in which case I get hit with the $77 call-out fee.

I know there are others on the forum who have this panel.
Is this relatively poor performance common for others?

Cheers,
David.

Update:

Well the service guy came out and said that there's not much he could do (surprise), that it's common to all Plasma and LCD (which I knew but others haven't looked as bad).

Anyway he accessed the service mode and changed one of the settings from AV to PC. This provided a small improvement to the way the pictures are displayed.

Best of all because he had to access the service menu no charge for me smile.gif

I was surprised by how many settings there are in the service menu, not just text language but changing things like the power save mode (time and %), ISM timeout, overscan %, etc. Even down to settings for the display chipset, and the number of scart connections blink.gif Not so keen to go in and play with much though unsure.gif .

In the mean time I've also fiddled with the DVD recorder and set it to progressive scan. This vastly improved the performance. This was mentioned in another thread for the RT-42PX10 (http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showtopic=6108&view=findpost&p=82818).

Only problem is the STB is still outputting interlaced scan signal (SD box). I can feed it into the DVD recorder via S-Video and then watch it from the DVD composite output in progressive and it's better than watching the STB from it's composite output.

Still interested to hear from others who have this panel...

cheers,
David.

David I have this model got it in December. Yes solarisation noticable on some shows though not so much on digital via a lg4100 stb.

I havent a solution but 1 thing what contrast are you running at I need to run at 90 BUT it is recommended at least in the UK site to run in at low contract and less brightness for 1st 200hrs.

I didnt realise this till at 160hrs.

Other than some solarisation the set is great especially on hd stb and even on (shock) foxtel digital.

Out of interest what is the firmware mine was 5.07. Is shown in the Service menu.

PS if you enter the service menu do so at your own risk i accidently reset the settings including hrs run to zero.

Hello Peacekeeper,

I suspect you get the improved performance from the LG4100 because you are outputting a progressive scan signal ?? As I mentioned when I switched to progressive output on the DVD recorder performance improved.

As for the Contrast I had read a post about running in Plasmas at lower settings so had tried to knock it down ...but that was after already running some time and then probably not enough. It's got about 160 h on it now too. I used the THX optimiser thing and managed to get a good picture with around 77 contrast and 65 brightness ...only been running that low for a few (10-20) hours.

I agree that other than the solarisation (tech calls it quantization) it seems like a good unit. Although I now wish I'd waited for the PX3.

The firmware version showing in the service menu is 5.13. Not sure how to go about upgrading though.

Funny you should mention accidently resetting the hours run to 0 ...I did the same thing thinking it would reset all the settings I'd fiddled with. I guess a note for others would be to write down all the settings as you find them so you can change them back later if needed.

Cheers,
David.

Yes the Px3 seems quite good but I am happy with mine. I am staying away from the service menu in case i mess something up. Actually would be a good idea to take a picture of the settings for "in case"

good luck
