Do you know if any shops in Melbourne have them on special or on sale? $999.00 seems a bit high.

Have a look through this thread

Basically, the price depends on how good you are at bargaining. Current prices seem to be between $850 and $750 - try anywhere that will price match.

Let's just say I'm not that good at bargaining - I'd rather wait for special sale of some sort.

You might be waiting awhile for a sale.

Bargaining is dead easy. Harvey Norman and Dick Smith are used to it. Just pick a reasonable price (or print out some some of the Best Price thread) go to a store and tell them that you are prepared to prepared to buy right now for $x.

The sales guy will check may have to go check with his boss or do some sort of other check but usually that just a formality.

Never had any problems with this approach. Normally you're in and out in five minutes. Everyone is happy - sales guy made a sale (and quickly), and you got a good discount.

Just do it!

Good luck.

Cliff

FYI - I picked mine up at Dick Smith Powerhouse at Southland (Melb)

I'm no power-bargainer either, but you don't have to get into a bidding war. I simply phoned up a couple of stores and told them the price quoted in this forum ($760 was the best at the time) and asked if they were prepared to match it. I did not get involved in any haggling etc. - if they did not want to match the price, move on to the next one.

I only had to ring two stores - the second one agreed to match the price immediately (this was The Good Guys).

Give it a go.

megamart seesm to be doing very good deals at the moment and pretty much the source of the cheapest prices in the 750 - 800 range.

Yep the trick to bargaining is say your (reasonable) price and see what they say. If you don't like it then just thank them politely and move on. Try give them an opening to meet your request as you walk out the door. Remember the power is in knowing exactly what is a reasonable price to pay.

Good Luck

The Good Guys had them listed for $880 (or similar) in a recent catalogue.

I would agree, I never pay the prices they give at Harvey Normans, Myer, Megamart, DJs, Retravision or any other electrical and white goods place. The prices they give you have plenty of fat in them to cover people buying interest free with no repayments for 12 months and whatever other gimmicks they have.

The other day I walked into a shop to buy a new $50 kettle, asked the guy if he can do a better price and he immediately gave it to me for $42. Eight dollars is eight dollars.

Hi Power_Surge
I sure that the Good Guys in Frankston is the only store in Melbourne that sells the Toppy. I got mine there for $825 in Febuary for Cash. Give them a ring on 9783 1311 and just see if they will price match what you think is a good price. Unfortunately you might have to put up with being on hold for a while why they try to find someone.

 I'm interested in one also, but not at present prices - far too high & overpriced IMO.

I'll wait until some used units come on the market from people upgrading to high definition. An 80 gb model would be fine here as I already have a 120 gb Strong 5390.

I just used by bargaining skills in Strathfield to buy this dvd player:

http://www.strathfield.com.au/ViewProduct.asp?ProdID=1320

Ticket price $79.00, but after 20 minutes of bargaining I managed to get it down to $75.00. Am I good or what?!

Power Surge you are going to kill off this industry! biggrin.gif How much profit are these poor b*****s going to make out of you? No wonder they are pushing for high definition players to bring them back some profit! Yonks, my first Toshiba DVD player cost mr $800 and that was a "sale" price. Times are sure changing.

I think you'll find if you goto any 'good guys' stores you'll be able to get it for $800.

I guess that as long as you value your time at $12 per hour it's a reasonable result. If you were parked on a meter you probably spent almost as much in parking charges as you saved.
Why bother putting so much effort into such little return especially when you could have gone to Aldi this week and purchased a similar unit for $69. Maybe you should drive back to Strathfield, get a refund, then drive to Aldi and save another $6!
