Hi Oznetics,
just logged on to let ppl know the same as you - new firmware out for the OpenTel 4200. I'm looking at the OpenTel website though (
http://www.opentel-australia.com/ ) and they are listing it as ver 2.00 (released 5/4/05).
This will be my first attempt at upgrade, so can anyone tell me whether the PVR needs to be attached to the TV to do the installation? There seems to be an option in the menus that would imply you need to be using the menus (and hence the TV), but the info I just got says you actually turn the PVR off when doing the upgrade. The reason I'm asking is cos my desktop PC (the only one I have with a serial port) is a long way from the telly and I'd rather just take the PVR to the PC rather than move the whole bloody setup!
Cheers,
Serin

Hi Serin
If you download the file you will see it is labelled XXXXXXX200.01.pgm
Regards
Oznetics
Mate its very easy.
All you do is disconnect the pvr from the power. Attach your Null modem cable from your pc to the pvr. Open the loader and select Open File. Select the *.pgm file and press open. Then go and hit the download button. You then plug your pvr into the power socket and it will start downloading. After it has finished, it will display some junk but when it says end, thats when it has finished. I usually wait 1 minuted after it says end just to make sure. You know when its finished when the time starts to display.
Let me know if you need help.

Can it be uploaded from a Mac?.

Foxtail - I don't think so, it uses it's own program to upload it. Although it does say it uses zmodem protocol.

Just installed the new firmware (2.001)
Seems like we have lost some fast forward speeds.
Now we have 2x, 3x, and 6x.
Yesterday, I put the old (1.19) on, which was older than the version (1.24) that was installed when I bought the box.
First thing I noticed was my signal strengths were back in the 90% + range, but picture quality was lower
Now with the 2.001, I am back down to 75% - 85% again, as with all the newer versions. Picture quality is restored.
Looks like I will still be dropping programs (except channel 7 of course)

I'll need to find someone with a Wintel PC by the looks of it.

This is all great guys, but what does the new FW do?? Seems it removes navigation speeds and lowers picture quality. Should I "upgrade"??

Why not take a drive down to Philip in Townsville, he loves doing software up-grades.

I don't think it lowers picture quality - have a re-read of that post. Picture quality was restored when he went to version 2.

Adding to all this we have just recieved a newer file - Version 2.002 which address the rewind speed problem. It has reduced the rewind speed to X4 for 100% stability. Apparently the X6 rexind still caused minute problems.

From my experience, I don't think it will.
In my last post, I mentioned the signal strength sitting at about 75% after the upgrade. This seems to be the cause of the "searching channels" problem.
With the old 1.19 software, my signal strength had returned to 95% with no "searching channels" problem.
Shame the 1.19 doesn't have the HDD shutdown option - the dfference in temperature of the box is very noticeable.

Question for the Opentel Firmware upgraders, how is it all going so far?
I don't want to give it a go if its not up to scratch.

One thing the new firmware has fixed ofr me is the gltichy DD2.0 recoding of aloder firmwares. Anything i recorded of a channel using DD2.0 would not playback. The onyl other problem hampering me was the dropout of channels bar 7, and the tuner B is locked when recording. This apparantly resolves the second, though i cant find reference to the signal strength issue. Guess i wil watch asnd see.

Hopefully this will be the last release by Opentel. Version 2.03 is available. Fixes are:
1- Pausing/freezing on Rewind rectified and now limited to 4X speed.
2- Recording/Playback Of Dolby Digital programs rectified
3- In certain areas of Australia (due to stream changes) a slow frame rate issue resolved.
Point 3 seems to be new fix from the previous fixes. Formware can be found
here.

Thanks Jamie-W, my problem is I have a PC and in another room so I'll need to move my cabinet to get to the PVR then remove power plug and all cables and take it to the PC, so I'm not doing anything until I'm convinced its a good move to upload this new firmware
