I spoke to the Topfield sales rep tonight at Megamart and he showed me a pic of the TF7000PVRt. Its a much nicer looking unit than the 5000pvrt.

He said it should be out next month with a RRP of $1799.

Built Wifi, USB hub (for external HDDs) etc etc.
ozdick
Will it record to DVD at that price?

Update
Oops skip that - saw the review where it says

Downsides - expensive
Requires arcane enthusiast utilities to convert to DVD burnable files.

USB hub (for external HDDs)

USB hub, very nice feature.

The features that I will looking for is
- ethernet adapter (pretty sure it has this, it will need to use DHCP though)
- being able to map to the T7000's disk drive from a MS Windows client across the network
- T7000 using ntp to keep it's clock up to date
- fashionable design of the unit and remote control
- being able to change aspect ratio during playback (can't do this on my Strong).
- being able to play divx or xvid files (obviously will require a TAP or equivalent, anyone has any idea whether this will be even remotely possible?)
- 160GB minimum disk drive

If I get all of this plus all of the functionality that I currently have with my Strong 5390 then I will definately buying one.

The price is high but probably fair. Most new stuff starts out at a fairly high price point and then drops down.

I want one so bad!!! I've always been happy with my SD model as I only had an SD tv, but now that I have an HD projector I'm dying to try it out with HD sources.

Can anyone speculate on the type of hard drive that will be included? I'd be planning on upgrading it immediately after purchase as 200GB is barely enough for my SD programs as I like to keep a decent catalogue of Wiggles and Hi5 shows for the 2 yr old.

I would say she's of East Timorese origin.

Portugese being a dominant language in East Timor (explains the name), and the fact that a lot of Chinese immigrants (specifically the Hakka) migrated to East Timor (explains the look).
Santa
It's arrived!

OK Santa, I know you're waiting for someone to say this...

$2,999.... tell 'em they're dreamin'

Its unlikely that the Topfiled rep would ever under quote, particularly on a soon to be released item! .

I have his card too! so i know it wasnt just a Megamart sales person wearing the topfiled shirt!

Anyway, i've been using a HD pci card for a year now and love it! Mind you it cost me $3K to build but it will handle all the video and image editing i can throw at it!

PS. the topfield guy said it records in .rec format (i dont know if this is any different to the 5000) and he said it can edit commercials out also but its not as clean as a HTPC.

It plays MP3's too!

Lastly, he mentioned that he personally fitted a 400Gb HDD for a lady which worked fine so far!

With my HTPC i get about 5Gb/hour on the 1080i broadcasts. How does this compare to the Toppy format?

I said it before, and I'll say it again,

You are one evil Santa wub.gif
Timmy Downawell
Enogh with all the bollocks. When Topfield Australia or Paige Communications have it on their sites, I'll believe it. They haven't even put up a 'coming soon' teaser to date.
Santa
Is that a challenge! ohmy.gif tongue.gif

PS: Thanks to all those who gave feedback on the ad! wink.gif

Let me think about this.

.REC format - same as PVR5000. Same issues with editing and saving to DVD.

Plays MP3's too! - Same as PVR5000

Personally fitted a 400GB HDD for a lady - on a device that is currently not available for sale? That's a good trick must be a lady with some good connections.

5GB / Hour for 1080i - stay with that. the PVR5000 is around 6Gb / hour for SD resolution.

By the way.

Santa. The fake HN was crap. I expected a much better con than that.
tonymy01
6G/Hr for SD?!?!? No way, 3G per hour generally, and is COMPLETELY related to the broadcast bitrate.
7.5megabit/s (SBS is less, some are only 6.5 to 7) divide by 8= 0.938megabyte/s
*3600= 3,375 megabytes/hour (3.4gigabyte/hr).
Or check here: http://www.dtvforum.info/index.php?showtopic=3737

HD is about 10 to 12megabit/s, so you do the maths.
RLR
Yes you are correct. It was 6GB per 2 hours I was thinking of.

Well sorry! I didn't want to make it too realistic ... it was meant as a joke, not a con!
I hope you did read the blurb! Where's Foss, btw... tongue.gif

I think that only somebody that was "sucked in " by the fake HN blurb (or thought it was genuine) would make such a remark!
Well done Santa! I really liked it smile.gif

He's probably too busy changing caddies, or maybe he's decided to sit down and actually watch all those programs he has recorded. smile.gif
Matt-R
heh. I called my wife (who works at HN advertising) to find out if it was real or not.

She thought it might have been the NZ catalog.

I could get her to make up a real looking fake if you want smile.gif
tonymy01
If I saw the same one that I figure you guys saw, then there is no way in hell that could have ever been real, Santa made the text blurb really "forum speak" or late night advertising kind of blurb
"This baby records with TWO (count them - 2!) tuners!"
"Now you can record not just one of the rare HDTV broadcasts, but TWO!"
"and component may even work".
"all the pizza, pasta... the WORKS!"
Some people really do need to ****read**** before jumping to conclusions like this!
Paranoid666au
So when the hell does the new Toppy come out?

It's march already and there's still no info! Or was it actual some time around march 2006! smile.gif

Topfield to release twin tuner HD PVR with 200GB of storage

Topfield's long awaited twin HD tuner PVR is due for release in late March 2005 with an expected recommended retail price of around $2,000

well this is the official blurb in the last DBA newsletter and qoutes "Topfield Australia's Managing Director Jai Kemp"

http://www.dba.org.au/newsletter/IB-FebMar...ll.asp#PRODUCT5

as far as I'm concerned its got a couple of weeks to get out on the shelves otherwise there goes his credibility. After all didn't he already qoute another date with the apc plug?
tonymy01
The same situation happened with the TF5000PVRt, due to circumstances beyond his control it got delayed twice, but only ended up being about 3 weeks or so later than the more concrete date he gave..
I mean, FFS, look at the Toshy launch, it got to shop shelves and had to be pulled back, Jai doesn't want or need this kind of thing to happen.
JasonBB
I wouldn't expect it to be on the shelves till early April, if we are lucky
