I recently bought a Kaon KTF-200S SD STB from JB Hi Fi. There is a bit of a price war on here in Bris at the moment with a bunch of basic STBs going for ~$129, representing reductions of $20 to $50 off prices a couple of weeks ago. After looking at the reviews on the DBA site I picked this unit as all the reviews were positive.

Generally quite happy with the unit, quite good reception in a fringe area, and easy set up, but the manual is pretty ordinary. OK for the very basics but pretty light on for anything else. Absolutely nothing on software updating for example.

So first issue: is there any support for updates?

Looking around the kaonmedia website (www.kaonmedia.com) I found the following files:

KUP226user.exe
KSF-200S_HW16.80.91_SW13.05.03_20040823conv.bin

The first is an application apparently used to do the uploading, and the second is an update file binary (dated at 23/08/2004, s/w ver 13.05.03, h/w ver 16.80.91 from what I could work out when I ran the app). I could not find any manual or info on how to actually do the updating.

Has anyone attempted this? Have I missed some vital piece of info?

Second issue: the manual specs show that the unit has a UHF modulator presumably to deliver the digital broadcast to a TV without AV inputs. This is just the situation I would like to use. (Limited quality I know, but it is the rumpus room! The real purpose is to get a decent signal which it does well.)

However, I can find no trace of a UHF signal in the TV rf out - just a pass through of the antenna signal.

Does anyone know if this stb, or at least the version being sold locally ( -S suffix) has the UHF modulator? Or have I got a faulty unit?

Thanks for any help on this.

Yes, firmware upgrades are only required to fix problems. Once a receiver is functional and problem free upgrades are most unlikely.

Hi tlg, not sure what u meant by UHF modulator but I bought the same one from JB also; has the antenna go into the STB then loop out to my VCR and the VCR is getting the analog signal OK . In your case if u are not getting the loop out signal to the TV RF input then better check the cables/connection first before taking it back to JB for a swap. I also rang JB before and ask for info and the guy same to know the product well enough to help me over the phone. Wish u good luck.

Can anyone advise where these flash files can be downloaded from? I've tried the KAON website and they don't seem to be there.
I've got a semi-conscious KTF200S and, before it gets binned I want to try to reflash it. I'm assuming that it might be that the software got glitched and needs a reload to fix its problems.
Mine keeps rebooting and, if I fight with it hard enough, I can get into the menu and reset it and then scan for channels and, as soon as I save everything and try to display a TV channel, the screen goes all green and then box reboots.
Any references to websites appreciated.

I've what you're looking for... but I can't send by a PM message.
If you agree I could upload the file on a public share area.

Can anybody send this file to me? My remote seems to have no effect, yet the set top works fine. But i know the remote is transmitting as i can hear it through my am radio.

For what it's worth, I've just resurrected my Kaon box. I found that I had to replace four of the capacitors on the "cold" side of the power supply as the mounted ones were expanding and looked like they were ready to burst. It cost me less than $3 and around 15-20 minutes of time and it's working like new.

Regards

(BTW. Please don't try this yourself unless you have some knowledge of electronics and know how to safely desolder and replace these kinds of components. You are still playing with 240 volts on the input side and, if you don't do the work properly and safely, you could cause serious damage and possibly injury if you aren't sure what you're doing.)
