Am I correct in assuming that when recording a program to VCR you must set the audio output to stereo?
Although I set up my system some time back to record via the composite outputs to my DVD/VCR combo, I only recently put it to the test (there just ain't that much worth recording).
Trouble is I have ended up with five hours of mini series with no sound.
Boy is the wife pissed!
I guess the digital signal passes to the VCR okay but it can't do anything with it?
Tried switching to stereo and bingo . . .

A VCR cannot record a digital signal, video or analogue, it is a purely analogue device..
I just record straight off the analogue signal from the antenna, not the best but the PQ and sound are more than acceptable. Sometime downstream I'll change to a DVD recorder.

Yes, unless you have an HD STB with built in Dolby AC3 decoder.

No, the Dolby Digital signal only comes out the SPDIF socket, not the analog outputs.
The MPEG (Stereo) audio is decoded to analog in the STB.

Bit of additional info.
VCR: audio via RCA l/r to amp input(Video 2). Video via Video In on 2nd TV SCART connector.
STB: normal audio via RCA to amp. Video 1 L/R. AC3 via optical to Video 2 on amp. The amp is supposed to be able to switch automatically between optical and analogue audio, but as the STB is on normally the optical input detects it always and have to switch manually to receive audio from VCR..
DVD: audio to amp via coax. Video via S-VHS to TV..
Don't know whether this helps, but it's how I do it and it all works..

Yeah,
I do it in a similar way.
VCR: audio via RCA to amp. Video via RCA to TV.
DVD: audio via optical to amp. Video via component to TV.
STB: audio via coax digital to amp. Video via S-Video to TV. Also audio and video via RCA to VCR. I run everything from the STB to a splitter box first so I can output both an S-Video and Composite signal.
DID I MENTION 4 BLOODY REMOTES!
Topdog

Yeah, but I bet you don't have 5 TVs and 5 PCs and kids who nick the working batteries out of the remotes and replace them with the ones that they have exhausted?
Topdog
Ya got me there. Only 4 TVs and two PCs, but the kids have all left home.....
