Hi all
I bought the DVB420 SD STB on Sunday and plugged it all in when I returned home. Since day 1 Channel 7 locks up (Normal 7 7Digital and HD 7 Digital) and I need to switch my unit off at the wall (pain in the rear). I'm using an LG 112 cm 100Hz WS RPTV SD TV.
Other channels seem fine (so far). SBS is ok. Channel 7 (when working) seems to be choppy too (I live in a 2 storey house near the city, Adelaide) and signal strength is max. The Software and Hardware versions are 1.01 (July 28 2004).
I reset it to factory defaults and auto-tuned the channels again.
I've emailed teac but they just replied to call the 1800 number (didn't get home from work in time to call this).
Any ideas on what the issue may be, has anyone had this before and had it solved?
My Second Query -
I have a spare SCART (well sort of - I can move the VCR) and S-Video input on my TV and would like to utilize what would give me the best picture quality. Could someone advise if the S-Video cable or a SCART-SCART (from say Jaycar) would be a better option for this.
Also I've read that TEAC can supply a SCART to S-Video cable as some pins are configured differently, do I ask for this from them or can they be purchased?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Garry,
The Ch7 issue could be anything from a dodgy aerial or cabling and splitters or even too much signal. Have a look around this forum for other examples of this.
The Scart to Scart connection would be the best (set the output to RGB). The s-video is also very good but you will need to get the special one from Teac - contact details at
http://stb.teac.com.au or modiify one if your have the tools. The pin info is in other threads in this forum.
Good luck

SCART to SCART with the cheap $9.95 Jaycar cable in RGB mode absolutely blew me away.
PQ was a vast improvement, sharp lines, and no fuzzies.
Also, if your TV supports it, the TV will automagically switch to the AV channel that the STB is on if the STB is on (if you know what I mean).
Also, the TV/STB button will switch between the TV and the STB (strange that) via the SCART cable.

And the $30 Jaycar scart-scart is even better again. I found the $10 Jaycar cable (=the Dick Smith $30 cable) started to give inconsistent colours after a few removal/insertions on my DVD player (cheap pins where as the $30 cable has the gold colour pins).

Called the Customer Service Hotline, they put me onto a Teac Repair centre in Adelaide. They said it sounded like a faulty unit.

I wouldn't take their word for it, that is their default statement for any problem
I have had 2 DV-B420's and both have not handled poor signals very well. If the signal is very weak and keeps pixelating it is highly likely that the STB will lock-up within a minute or two of this. In fact when tuning in my first DV-B420 the antenna was in such a poor position that it couldnt find half the channels, then froze on the channel search screen and refused to even power up after that, the box was completely locked.
My software version is also 1.01, but Teac will upgrade the software very shortly, so it may handle things differently then. If you are in Adelaide you will also probably notice changing to ch7 or SBS will usually result in popping/scratching noises. I have complained about this and Teac is supposed to be fixing this in the next upgrade as well.

I'm in Adelaide. I've got good reception, I've noticed a electrical surge through the Teac box when it's placed on My DVD Player and VCR which may be from the aerial??
I have not had the popping/scratching issue occur on 7 or SBS.
Chances are I won't get much time to actually take the box to the TEAC repair centre as they are open from 9-5 M-F only so I'd need to tick off early from work or pull a day off. May need to wait for the software update and try that.... time will tell.

Hmm, if it's still locking up on ch7 when your signal strength and quality are at max, and you have no other problems with the box then I think it's time to demand a new STB from the retailer or Teac if they refuse (which they shouldnt).

UPDATE:
Took the STB back to The Good Guys were I bought it, they replaced it with another unit.
Took it home, set it up. Channel 7 was spot on, no issues at all. SBS was a little poppy (sound wise) and image was breaking up a little. Cleared to factory settings twice and resetup channels automatically twice until it came good. (I did try this with the old box to no avail).
So basically it's all good now. Must've been a faulty box (I tested it at my parents place and at the store and it wouldn't pick up some channels -saying signal strentgh was too weak).
Thanks for all your advice peoples.
