Hi I am having an issue with Acer in regards to a warranty.

I bought an ACER Projector X1160Z DLP SVGA 3 years ago and the DMD Chip has gone, hence all the 'stary' black and white pixelisation.

Most sites advertise 5 year warrantys on the DMD Chip?

The Acer Techie is saying no? Never heard of that?

Here are a couple of links advertising this as a standard warranty for all Acer Projectors.

http://www.acer.com....el/EY.JBG05.018

http://www.techbuy.c...Y.JCK01.012.asp

http://www.ebay.com....984.m1438.l2649

If anybody has any insights or help regarding this, I would be appreciative, I really don't want to have to upgrade my projector just yet, as I have really only had it properly up and running this past year! :(

Thanking you,
Helen :)

A Philippine webiste is probably not the ebst place to look for warranty conditions at Acer Australia. I see on the Australian Website it mentions 2 years for projectors. Not having warranty does not mean it shouldn't be fixed for free however. I am not saying in this case it has to be, but statutory warranty is worth reading about as it goes above and beyond the standard warranty provided by the company. This covers you as a consumer by virtue of the fact a product should have a reasonable life when purchased which is not limited to a short warranty period the company may give you. Best to try to understand your rights in this regard and then discuss what needs to be done and how you can sort out a reasonable outcome with the company. But I doubt if it is 5 years old you will get it done for free.

Hi Helen,

I had a look at the acer website (its globally based and you can switch around countries as you want). Warranty info is found via the MODELS tab when looking at specific series. Travelling the globe it looks like the warranty varies from country to country (in the USA its one year only) but most areas seem to have two years standard. Australia doesn't have a seperate DMD clause in its warranty, but as you notice the Phillipenes does here.

I was sceptical of a possible Statutory Warranty claim however if it can be shown that a specific five year waranty is offered in other countries for the DMD specifically then I'd say you have a good prima facie case that you'd have a reasonable expectation your's would last that long at least. You could write to Acer and request they replace the part mentioning their statutory resonsibility and see what they say. If not then getting it adjudicated should cost under $50 - just takes a fair while and no guarantee of success.

As an alternative, it appears the model DMD chip you need is the DMD8060-6038b. Cost would be $166 from eBay to by one yourself (or $150 here). I don't know how easy it is to replace it for a non tech - although the service manual gives good instructions and makes it look pretty straight forward. FWIW I don'tt imagine a repair store would charge more than $50 and they'd likely do it on the spot.

Disclaimer: All info provided as is. Check anything you're unsure about.

Regards

Peter Gillespie

Good luck getting any manufacture to fix your 'out of warranty" product for free.  My 'now retired" BenQ W5000 had a 2 year warranty and the DMD (a known global fault) got a case of the dreaded vertical stripes about 6 months after that.  I contacted BenQ in Sydney and was given a quote for $770 + $20 shipping to have the DMD replaced.  They would only give the new DMD 28 days warranty, so I elected to buy a new BenQ W6000 which I got at a great price through this forum's GB.
