Item: Onkyo PR-SC5507 AV Preamp Controller + Extras !!!

As-New, purchased new from a Sydney HiFi store in late Feb 2011, comes with balance of Australian 3 year warranty (will provide original receipt with sale). Comes with all original packaging, remote, Audyssey room calibration mic, AM/FM antennas, owners manual and power cable. I'm also including seperately purchased as-new Onkyo UP-A1 Ipod dock and UP-DT1 DAB+ Digital Radio module that integrate seamlessly with the Onkyo PR-SC5507.

Basically considering selling it as it has way more features than I use and alot of the additional features I already have in other devices such as HTPC, Squeezebox for internet radio etc. Will probably go back to an simpler Rotel or Emotivia AV pre-amp. It is currently connected upto a couple of high quality Elektra Power amps (not included), so you are free to select your own brand etc and connect up with either unbalanced or balanced cables.

Below is the general specs from Onkyo and links the user manual, spec sheets, user reviews etc. As far as I can tell it is pretty much fully upto date to the current Onkyo 5509 model recently released except for ARC HDMI 1.4 return but if you have a half decent Blu Ray player such as a Oppo 93/95 etc its probably irrelevant as it will already have dual 1.4 HDMI output for secondary connection to your 3D display. The original RRP in Australia was $4500 + about $500 for the extra Onkyo modules.

Note additional extras mentioned in the original add, ie. Onkyo ipod dock and external DAB+ module have now been sold seperately, as such I have lowered my asking price for the Onkyo 5507 from $1800 to 1600 ono.

Just curious can you connect normal banana plug speakers into XLR  with an adapter ? Or would this totally defeat the purpose, and ruin the benefits of XLR in the first place?

dont understand this question. op is selling a pre amp so you wouldnt be hooking up speakers to it via banana connections. you would need to hook up a power amp to this pre amp either via xlr or rca's and then you would be able to hook up your speakers to the power amp

xlrs benefit in the home is pretty much very limited to non existent. you also need to be utilising a fully balanced equipment all the way through the signal path to gain any benefit. there are good threads in the htfaq sticky re balanced xlrs

The 5507 is a processor only, you need a separate power amp to drive speakers.  XLR connectors are not for speakers, they're for interconnects.

GROUND LOOP!

From what I have read Al, xlrs remove any possibility of ground loop problems via the pre/pro and power amp ... in my case they would have broken the ground loop meaning I would have saved weeks of trouble shooting and searching.

From what I understand it is because they are balanced that there is no common "ground" for the ground loop to travel through?

chops they can also be the biggest contributor. because the way grounding is handled in not trully balanced gear using balanced connections and interfacing with unbalanced equipment.

in my opinion if going balanced go all the way through, otherwise waste of time !

you wouldnt be using "banana" connectors for active speakers though would you ? what active speakers have banana plugs ? that would be quite dangerous as someone could accidentally connect high level outputs from a power amp into their low level inputs ? what active speakers do you have ?

I didn't realise as i don't own active speakers yet. I would like to buy some Seaton speakers in the future though. I thought you still had to run speaker wire to each speaker, as well as the XLR even if they were active? Or do you just need to run XLR cable from pre amp to seaton speaker?

no most definitely if active speakers youd be running line level interconnects as opposed to speaker wire. active speakers are hooked up just as your sub is (subwoofers are active) with the seatons youd have to confirm whether has RCAs or XLRs. he probably provides or if not you can get an adapter for xlr to rca so can hook up either way. I'm not a big fan of adapters though, often a good source of hum and noise and such !

As Al says htpc; adapters are a waste when straight unbalanced is as good [depending on balanced/unbalanced on the active speakers B) ] Seem to recall seaton supplying custom line level cables ??

I agree great price for somethign as new, locally purchased with full warranty and with goodies thrown in. suprised hasnt gone. be an ideal step for someone looking to move from avr to separates

Definitely a great buy for someone, I think the hurdle for most would be not having an amp to partner it with would add to the overall cost.

up until the other day seaton had his elektra up for $1600, would have been a steal for both at $3100.........

There are 4 types of connections on an Active Seaton speaker:

1. Neutrik PowerCON - Line Level Input Power
2. Neutrik SpeakON - Line Level Signal Output 12A Connection
3. XLR Male - Looping Output
4. XLR Female - Signal Input

For home operation you need No #1 and No #4. No #2 can be used to daisy chain to other speakers (More often than not another Subwoofer given the Monoraul nature of the signal). I use No #3 for connecting into a Mic Pre-Amp when performing calibration measurements.  

Mark provides RCA/XLR adapters if required although for signal purity and to gain the benefits of a Balanced Cable/Signal it is best to stick to Balanced through the entire chain (Although there a precious few components/Processors that enjoy a dedicated Balanced topology like Al's Denon Pre-Amp for example).
