Hi all, wonder if you can help me.

I have a Beyonwiz DP-Lite, and would like to convert my Store-bought DVD's to MP4 to have on a external hard drive.

I have set the DP-Lite to passthrough Dolby Digital. I have tested it with (a) One-HD ( a dvd fab vob file on usb © dp-lite recorded from tv file Arsenal-Tv on Dp-Lite HDD. In all cases, the blue light comes up on my old sony receiver, indicating 5.1 Dolby Digital, and the cable isn't faulty.

My Setup is as follows.
TV panasonic plasma
Beyonwiz Dp-Lite -> HDMI to the plasma
Beyonwiz Dp-Lite -> optical cable to the sony reciever.
Sony Reciever - Set to auto format decode

In all cases I have used Handbrake, Normal preset, MP4 container, Mv4 apple friendly extension.

The Problem is that when I play a file converted by handbrake, I do not get dolby digital 5.1 from my amplifier.
I get 2 channel from the receiver. Display on receiver states PCM
I also get video on all the following senarios. (The video is pretty good BTW)

Using Handbrake, I have converted a DVD with 2 audio streams. AAC in the first box and under that a AC3 passthrough in the second.
The Result: I got 2 channel from the receiver, when I select the 2nd audio stream using the DP-Lite, still 2 channel audio.

I then created another handbrake video this time with AC3 passthrough in the first box and AAC in the second.
The Result: I got 2 channel from the receiver, when I select the 2nd audio stream using the DP-Lite, still 2 channel audio.

I then created another handbrake video file, this time with only ONE audio track, AC3 passthrough.
The Result: No sound on the receiver at all.

The problems is that I don't know if the stuff up is the DP-Lite or handbrake

It's got me stumped.

Can you post the file specs using mediainfo

I've been this route [own a couple of Dp-lites] and I think you will find the  Dp-lite is simply not capable of
5.1 be in input or output, regardless of what you do, [software//connections] On the other hand your sound
processor should be able to convert two channel into 5.1.  How good the quality of the conversion is, remains
to be heard.
Having said that I would really like to be shown how wrong I am.

In both cases, the video files play with a good picture, but with only 2 channel (stereo)

@basset. I am able to get Dolby Digital from ONE HD, and a recorded ONE HD tv show.

Herb ; its clear from mediainfo that the 1st file file contains downrezed 384kbps dd 5.1 and the 2nd dvd quality 448 so no problem there . I have a p1 which is close to your lite with the same gui I imagine . If you have a look at the audio video settings you may have a aac setting just above the dd passthrough setting . Whenever I activate this to decode and not  passthrough I get 2ch pcm everytime as you get . Set to passthrough an iso copy on my hdd; u571 gives 5.1ex bitstream as expected . This is all a throwback to the ancient s1 with its 5.1 analogs ;as if you need built in decoders for lossy these days   

It seems the aac decoding is the default mode even when dd is set to the correct passthrough    Logical from the point of dd being an optional codec for the channels but not so good when trying to play rips

I know you dont have an on screen display but when I hit popup I get a indication on the screen of either 5.1 or 2,0 ch track ; if that doesnt show the vfd should  have a dd symbol at the least .

I'm beginning to think that what I want to do is not possible.
In the Beyonwiz forum, there are a heap of ppl with similar problems with no aparent fix.

It's time to consider another option, like a WD TV LIVE

Ide cut the losses too mate ; it probably wouldnt work over hdmi as well . aac is part of the mpeg2 standard  but is a bit redundant compared to dolby these days . Much better codec support with  a wd tv live

Just to let anyone who is interested.  I have solved the problem.

The DP-Lite can and does play MKV files. 5.1 dolby digital is passed through the lite to the Reciever via optical cable.

Here is what I did
Handbrake (my choice of conversion program - Doesn't HAVE to be Handbrake)
Change the container from Mp4 to MKV
Change "Picture" to strict. (personal preference)
Video "Constant Quality" Move slider to 19 (personal preference - I think it looks better - might be placebo effect)
Audio Track 1 MUST be English AC3 5.1 with AC3 Passthrough
Audio Track 2 can be (don't have to have) English AC3 - AAC (faac)

The Video files play perfectly on an external hard drive with DD5.1 comming from the Reciever.

Edit: Haven't done DTS yet. That is the next problem to tackle.

Only the DP-S1 handles DTS IIRC, as Beyonwiz licensed it for the S1 because of the DVD player built-in but not the other models.

Diesel, you are 100% correct.
I made a MKV file with DTS passthrough and DD5.1 passthrough and the DD5.1 worked and when the DTS was selected there was no sound.
