everything i record nowadays ends up freezing in various points in the programme and then jumping ahead a little.
is it time to ring for a new one, or is there something i can do here at home?

Are you running the latest software? This was a problem in the last release.

Current is sat 116.2.8.2.4.28

That's the most-likely culprit.

Lots of similar issues happening to iQ/2's everywhere after the last firmware update.

Report the fault to Foxtel (they'll probably be expecting your call)  :)

Press and hold select + back buttons until all lights light up.
Release and wait until all lights light up a second time and then press the power button, up arrow, down arrow and power button again on the box.

I had my iQHD box doing the same freezing thing.  I noticed that various parts of the box were getting extreemly hot (quite ironic, really).  I attached a quiet PC fan to the side of the box and now it runs a lot cooler and I seldom get the freezing (seen it once since).  I don't like what extreem heat does to electronics over time.  Other than that, love the 1TB box.

Look a couple of posts up, he told you exactly which buttons. Print it out and keep it, it works every time.

It took me a few goes but the above actions actually work.

They certainly do work but make sure all the button presses are on the box itself, not the remote!

sometimes in the early hours of the morning the iq starts making noise and turns off and on. i always presumed that was when the software was being updated?

This is pretty much when most upgrades are carried out.

so does that mean there is no need to manually upgrade and push all those buttons?

No. Unless you haven't got the latest software version and are in some sort of hurry. They will get to you eventually. I only got the latest version less than a week ago whereas my work colleagues have had it for weeks.
