Hi

As above.

My DMRXW300 has stopped reading discs or burning to discs so i grabbed a DMRXW385 this week.

TV is a Pana LCD.

I Have connected the DMRXW385 to the TV as normal and exactly as the old one was and that is all fine.

Trying now to connect the DMRXW300 to DMRXW385 for two reasons:

1) to watch the stuff I recorded last week.
2) to transfer the stuff that I hadnt got around to burning to disc.

Now - I am no techo !!

I used the cable with the red white and green ends and put them in "AV in" on back of new unit, and in the AV holes on the front of the old unit (it doesnt say out or in ??).  Is this right or should it be in the back AV out holes ??

Then whats next ? Where do I view the old navigator screen to play whats on the old unit and hit record on the new unit ?

And - first prob I noticed was of course the remotes override each other - so aiming either at the old unit to switch it on - turned off the new unit.

Any tips (in non techo speak !!!) greatfully recieved.

Thanks in advance.

Ok Kjoy 2 ways you can use to conect the old one to the new
1.Svideo this will give best PQ. Conect a svideo lead from "svideo out" on the old 300 to the "svideo in" on the new machine(most likely AV1) then conect a set of rca (red & white) leads into the audio outs and ins where the svideo"s are.

2.Composite is the same method as above but instead of using svideo leads just use composite(yellow rca) and connect the red white and yellow leads from video out on the 300 into one of the AV ins on the new machine.

Once you have done that put the new machine on the AV input you connected the old one to and you should have the pics of your old maCHINE.

Also you can change the remote code on the remotes so they dont interfer with each other, cant remember off hand but its in the manual and you can chose code 1,2 or 3. Its a simple process but youhave to do it to both machine and remote.

Hi Wheelz.

Ok just making sure I understand (cos I dont know most of the terminology!!).

First up - thanks for the tip re the remote codes - have now done that so old remote controls old machine (1) and new remote is number 2.

The only cable/cord I have is black with 3 ends at each end - red yellow and white.

So in the new unit the cable is in the AV In.

And the old unit - I changed it to the back and put them in AV out.

Both machines are now on and I selected "direct navigator" on the old remote and then flicked through the AV1,2,3,4 and HDMI 1,2,3,4 options on the new remote on the TV screen - expecting to eventually see the old units direct navigator screen appear miraculously.  Nothing.

Am I missing something ? another cable ?

thanks :)

Hi, firstly you need to set your TV's input to that used by your new machine so you can see what happens on the TV screen when you use the new machine.

Once you have that working you need to select the AV input on the new machine so that you can now see the picture of what's on the old machine. I think you can just scroll through the inputs of the new machine using the up/down channel buttons on the new remote until you see the picture from the old machine.

Once done you can now select what you want to play on the old machine and record that on the new machine.

Yep its the second paragraph that I am having problems with.

New unit is working fine with Tv etc. Have sorted the remotes so they are note messing with each other.

But no matter what AV channel I select - I cant find the old dvdr.

I know it should be similar to clicking on PC to find where I have connected the laptop, and where the VCR use to be on AV4 (its currently unplagged while I am sorting out the dvdr to the dvdr !).

God I wish everything came without cords and just automatically spoke to each other - my life would be easier.

Are you sure you have the red white & yellow connected to the AV OUT on the xw300? and connected to the AV1 IN on the xw385 and make sure yellow goes to yellow, red goes to red etc? Put the tv on the AV input the xw-385 is connected to then put the xw-385 on to its AV1 and what you want should be there.
It is a very simple set up so you must have over looked something.

Connect the Red-White-Yellow terminals labelled OUT on the rear of the 300 (they are the middle row of three horizontal rows of terminals) to the Red-White-Yellow terminals labelled AV IN on the rear of the 385.   Page 13 of the 385 manual refers.    Using the 385 remote, press the [INPUT SELECT] button, scroll UP/DOWN on the TV screen to highlight "AV", then press the [OK] button.    Page 56 of the 385 manual refers. (The 385 has only one set of AV input terminals).   The TV screen should now display whatever is being outputted by the 300.
   Good luck,
RogC   (I hope I've got this all right!)

Yeay !!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks heaps folks !!!  :hyper:

I was pressing the AV button trying to find it and RogC mentioned trying the INPUT SELECT button and that was the magic solution !!!

I feel better at least knowing I had already plugged everything in the right way - I am getting better at this LOL. Just the wretched buttons on the remote that stuff me !!!!!!

So - who owns the 385 now ?  I was reading the manual last night and one big change from the 300 appears to be that every single recording is done in DR (whereas on the 300 you could set up your timer record to either be DR, SP, LP, EP etc etc). And if I am reading it correctly - if I want to cram a lot onto a dvd in say LP - I have to first run a conversion from DR to LP prior to burning. AND if I am reading correctly - this conversion is in "real time" (ie lengthy!!).  I did note that it appears to be able to be set to do the conversion after you go to bed !

If anyone owns one can you confirm I am reading this stuff re conversion correctly ?  As it seems like a bit of a pain - time consuming etc.  I will end up just doing it all as DR and using a lot more blank dvds !

Really appreciate all your help re connecting the two up !!!! :hyper:  Made my weekend a lot easier !

Glad you sorted it.
My xw-300 has crapped itself exactly like yours only the pvr section works anything to do with discs is stuffed.Seems its a common fault with that model.

Hope my BW500 doesn't crap itself.   Generally, I am very happy with it.    What I miss most with it is that the remote doesn't have +60s or -10s buttons.
I'll throw in a "wobbly".    The DMR-BW500 is a Blu-ray recorder.    I have yet to archive anything to a BD disc.    I have the discs, and  ALDI has BD-Rs at $9.99 for five.   I still archive to DVD.    There's an opening for a new topic!

I've got the 380 & have set up the 385 for 4 friends but if the BW500 doesn't have +60s and -10s then I would never buy one, I use those all the time when watching FTA recorded stuff you get used to certain programmes ad breaks and immediately do say 3 taps x 60+ and 2 taps by -10 and you are right where you want to be, takes a lot longer and is more fiddly with FFW. Is it a Blu Ray licensing requirement or just Panasonic doing it?

The 500 was the first Blu-ray recorder on the market and I leapt in and bought one.  However, I am very pleased wih what it does with regard to recording, editing recordings and archiving to discs.     I also have a Topfield PVR which has a jump fwd button and a jump back button which is, as you say, a very quick and easy way to bypass unwanted viewing.    I have no idea about the answer to your question.

I think mine lasted pretty well as I do give it a pretty good workout with tonnes of burning per week in its lifetime. My older LG lasted 3 years before the same bit died.

Have discovered a hilarious "problem". Nothing major but I am now convinced technology is possessed.

OK so on the 300 I had a heap of timer recordings set up.  Got home from work tonight and noticed it flashing away getting ready to record and I thought oops I forgot to delete them all from the settings.

So I stopped the recording and went in and cancelled all the timer records.

At 8.30 I noticed there it was - flashing away again.  turned it on, when into its menu, and there were all the timer recordings back again !  Deleted them, stopped the recording (which it wasnt actually doing - it was just flashing).

Hour later - there it goes again and there are all my timer records again !

Its like its picking them up from the 385 - but rather than actually starting to record - it just flashes away for the whole hour that the 385 is set to record for.

Seriously - its possessed !!!!

I am going to just hurry up and transfer 30 hours of stuff over and delete my photos and cds off it and toss it out ! (either that or find a priest !).

Hi KJoy,
I was in the market for a XW385 last year until I found out that it records in DR only and to copy recordings to DVD the file conversion is done in real time.  In the end I managed to find a XW380 and bought that instead as it records to HDD using XP, SP, LP etc, like your XW300.
As to recording in DR, you'll still need to convert to XP, SP, LP etc to burn to DVD.

If you're serious about throwing it out I'll take it off your hands. My old EX75 is playing up sometimes and I don't use the DVD in it since getting a blu-ray player.

Sheesh wish I had researched and found that out first. Durnit!  I wonder why they added the whole conversion thing when the 300 was working fine without it ! Just doubles the workload - especially since the conversion sounds like its real time too.

rpant - have sent you a PM.

So the demonic possession continues. Its like the 300 "reads" the 385 timer records and transfers them to its own memory. Its not actually recording - it just starts flashing - and continues flashing for the whole time the 385 is really recording!

But at least I have started the slow transferring process. And have learned my lesson about saving so much stuff up instead of burning weekly!!!
