i just came back from Lacey's and using a spectrum analyser it picked up nothing..

the antennas are powered, he had a suspicion that it needs power (didnt have a power readily available) but result showed nothing showed up at all, just abit of noise..

given that i've powered them already and pick up nothing but SBS/TVS in my car, the conclusion is that they're more than likely crap? (im in the same area as lacey's) but it still doesnt explain why people in melbourne and ryde NSW can pick up everything. :(

If it's a powered antenna (amplified) and there is no power getting to it, the amp will actually be blocking the signals.

How does the antenna obtain power... from separate DC power leads, or from the receiver?

Either way, without power, it won't receive anything.

Ryde generally has very high signal levels and Melbourne (like most places) has variable results, depending on specific location, however, if the antenna/receiver is faulty, then it probably won't matter where it's used... it won't work.

Col,
There is also a link to mobile antennas which has bee there for years.

AlanH

Alan,

Just a suggestion... instead of an instruction to go here, click on this, then go to.. etc, etc...... it would be more helpful and much easier if you just post the direct link to the information when responding to queries.

i just tested another antenna in teh area.. same design and picks up the same thing.. TVS and SBS but nothing on VHF..

think ill be going to another design of antenna.

could you guys please recommend what would be better out of these 2?

http://www.erisin.co...erial_p215.html
http://www.erisin.co...ifier_p163.html

im leaning towards the first one simply because u get a higher gain, but is the design essentially the same? i.e is it metal inside but with a black casing? (dont understand the purpose for this but).

id imagine it would be preferred over the second one that is an exposed traditional metal rod as it performs better? but again im unsure hoping you guys could help clarify here

i know its a risk but if you guys could please advise accordingly on these 2..

You still haven't tested your receiver on a known-working VHF antenna.. eg: your home roof-mounted TV antenna.

Until you can confirm if your receiver actually works on VHF.. there's little point throwing money away on several different antennas if the receiver itself is faulty.

ANY antenna installer should be able to help you set up and test (and also test any aerials you may have). Will also have a metric f**kload of F-PAL Adaptors. If you want it working I'd suggest you try one, rather then continue to spend money and probably bark up the wrong tree.
