Hi guys

Just wondering if it is normal to see light patches on the screen at the locations of the LEDs?

I just got a Samsung 55" D6600 LED backlit LCD, and when displaying an image that is all black, for example, I can see multiple lighter splotches spaced evenly around the image.

Should I be concerned or is it standard fair on this type of TV?

Can take a photo if needed.

Welcome to the "advantages" of edge lit LED LCD, inferior to the old CCFL lighting system it has replaced.

Haha yeah I guess I CAN do that... though I do enjoy running the screen on full brightness so it burns your eye balls. I'll try notching it down a bit!

I swear when LED backlighting first came out, they were all LED Local backlit.. but then they switched to this cheaper method? Series 8 and 9 do local backlight yeah?

Samsung only ever sold one back lit model in Oz and that was the A950 about 3 years ago, they then got sewed by Sharp for patent infringement and where forced to use LED edge lighting which is inferior to conventional CCFL back lighting. A very clever and extended advertising campaign was then used to sell people on "LED" TV's, it worked really well as most people think "LED" is better and deserving of a higher price tag even though picture quality was and still is inferior to the cheaper convectional LCD's that have nearly disappeared from the TV landscape but remain the only choice for high end professional LCD PC monitors where quality matters and slim styling does not.

LED was a big scam and a marketing coup for Samsung who cleaned up.

Very interesting Owen. All makes sense. It's a real shame. I thought the Series 9 used local LED backlighting now?

No, the series 9 is edge lit with "local" dimming.
Samsung would have to pay Sharp royalties to use LED back lighting and they have been unwilling to do that.
Edge lighting allows a panel to be much slimmer which is better for marketing, and that's what matters to them

The old LA series 9 was LED backlit with local dimming. Samsung was sued by Sharp for patent infringement and so will likely not produce another LED backlit set. Personally I'll be waiting for the 55" OLED panel to come out.

Mate that's crazy TBH, calibrate the screen correctly then under normal lighting conditions you probably won't notice it. When watching in a dark environment after calibration you'll probably only see it when a black or dark screen is displayed.

Some models were yes, but only the expensive ones had local dimming. Now they're mostly edge-lit LED models or older CCFL back-lit models.
