Hi All, I stumbled across this guide for getting Netflix on your Aussie AppleTV 2:

I tested it over the weekend and it works great and the value for money is insane, makes Boxtel look like the poor value that it is! It even works great on my paltry 5.3mbps DSL connection!  



PS, and the content companies wonder why Aus is full of Pirates!!! Perhaps if they gave us this sort of value proposition we'd stop DL'ing so much content illegally!!!

Hey dJOS, if you change the DNS settnigs in your computer, is that only for the setup phase, or does it need to be that way permanantly otherwise I assume all traffic will go via these guys?
Assume the change to ATV2 DNS is permanent though.

What download speed is recommended? I'm on Optus ADSL2 but the speed sucks, around 400k download speed.

I just changed the DNS settings on my router so I didn't need to mess with the setting on my ATV or PC and that works great for everything.

400k sounds like about 4mbps which should still work - sign up for the one week trial for both Netflix and unblock-us and then you can decide if it's worth it for you or not. The nice thing about Netflix is that it automatically adapts the stream to your available internet bandwidth.

I've been using this for a while now, I was using strongvpn prior to that but the speed was cut in half. Unblock is much faster

Could this be done in much the same way through an Oppo93? My ATV2 is in the family room for casual music streaming and quite frankly I don't have a spare HDMI input on my receiver to swap it into the home theatre room.

Should work exactly the same as on the ATV.

Well, Ive set it up, changed the settings in my router like dJ suggested, can access the Netflix website and could start to watch a program on my PC? Tried to watch comething on my iPad which tries to install a Netflix App, but tells me the service isnt available, try to watch it on my ATV2 and get a message that Netflix is unavailable, try later, even though I can watch it on my pc. Any ideas?

even from my PC, I cannot find the Netflix app for iPad, looks like it's disappeared?

Edit: power reset the ATV, all is good now but still cannot download the iPad app. Bandwidth must be on the low side, PQ is fairly average. Will see how we go.......

Cool, good to hear you got it working.

To get the Netflix iPad app you need a US iTunes account, then you sync your iPad to put the app on it and then switch back to yor Aus ITunes account.

This worked for me.

Not sure about you, but I'm having a stack of trouble trying to get a stable connection. Watched a bit of stuff last night, most movies appear only to be in 2 chanel stereo and not sure what market Netflix is appealing too, but seems there are a lot of movie titles missing and a lot of it seems to be older stuff. Maybe they are affliiated with a particular studio?

Anyway, today, I can browse the menu's ok but when trying to watch something, just get the spnning wheel for a while then the ATV resets, or, get a yellow triangle with an "!" in it saying connection error. I've seen this mentioned else where with a bit of Googling. ATV is at the latest 4.4.4 version.

I'll stick at it, but not really blowing my socks off at the moment.

Most of the older ones are stereo but the new movies I've watched are 5.1DD.

I wonder if 4mbps is simply too slow? At 5.5mbps even the HD content looks like SD but its acceptable for us. Your ISP can have a big impact too, especially if they run badly congested backhaul to the exchanges (or worse youre on a Telstra RIM) like the ultra cut price ISP's do!

I'll personally just keep voting Labour (and encouraging anyone else who'll listen) till the NBN is completed and we no longer have to rely on a rotting PSTN system that wasn't designed to carry data in the first place!

Interestingly I've just discovered tonight that I can get Netflix in glorious HD on my PC, it starts in SD and very quickly ramps up to HD and looks really superb - I wonder why this transition doesn't seem to happen on the ATV2?

I bought an Xbox Live Gold Sub tonight so I'll see what the Xbox360 experience is like and report back in a few days.

Ok netflix is waaaay better on Xbox 360, it's actually HD and it actually tells you what has dd5.1 and I'm actually getting HD picture quality.

Downside is that you need an Xbox live gold account which can be aussie thankfully - you also need to create a US Xbox live account (non paid works). you need to load the US one first, run Netflix then when it asks for a gold account switch to your Aussie and enjoy Netflix.
