You upscale Blu ray?  Really?  So your video display then scales it back to 1080?

Tbh, between that and having my point explained back to me, then yes, it does give me bragging rights.  lol.  Enjoy my "levels" next time you watch....

And I'll still have a JVC in a heartbeat!

Yes, I upscale Bluray to 3840x2160 applying luma sharpening in the scaling algorithm, I leave chroma alone as sharpening chroma emphasizes noise. This processed image is then down scaled to 1920x1080 for output to the projector.
This unconventional process gives an MTF boost to mid band spatial frequencies which are vital to apparent image sharpness without significantly sharpening at the pixel level which would increase artifacts, it is also free of the edge enhanced look of conventional sharpening as provided buy the projectors processing.

As for levels, back in the days of CRT I frequently felt the need to fiddle with the brightness control on a title by title basis as getting good shadow detail and optimal blacks out of CRT was very tricky and normally a compromise. Since going to digital I have not felt the need to fiddle and simple set brightness and forget. I cant remember the last time I saw a movie that was encoded incorrectly enough to be of concern, if I play with anything its gamma adjustment.

All that's wrong with the 10,000$ projector is a misaligned mirror in the green channel. Amazing that they will replace it instead of repair, and with a new model worth far more.

All the best

Yeah this is what I thought originally too - but there's numerous people around the world who've had the same issue with their optical blocks... and they too have all been issued a replacement model. It could be that they no longer have replacement blocks available for the HD950.

Either way, it's coming on to 10 weeks now, which is ridiculous. I didn't spent $10k (actually less) to go without it for 2 - 3 months at a time!

Considering your projector is out of warranty and you are to be provided with a current model replacement for free a little delay is not a big ask IMHO.
It took me 3 months and two attempts to get my Sony repaired under an extended warranty that I paid for. The warranty provider was not the problem, the repairer (an authorized Sony service provider) and some delay in obtaining parts where.

Considering the change over in local distributor you are not doing too bad.

Your prior post explains my comment fully - no need to pretend to be obtuse about it.

Since I pioneered upscale-sharpening 10 years ago and posted my findings on AVS forum where it subsequently became popular with HTPC users, and owned CRT projection for 6 years so I am well aware of its advantages and limitations, I am curious exactly what I am supposed to have "researched" and what "fantasy" is involved?

Just calling it as I see it. I have no intention of indulging you ego by researching your "facts" for you .... Classifying them as opinion is good enough for me.

Totally agree. We all have our failings but Owen brings to this forum a mine of knowledge.
Owen has been a great help to many on the TV threads. He always says that  he writes it as he sees it. However like he has stated many times it is only his opinion and he agrees that his style of writing can appear to be offensive to some people and I admit that  was once I was one of them.
However I understand him a lot better now.

Ok so I have some updates. The manager I'd spoken to over a week ago has gone away on a spur of the moment thing so I was fortunate enough to get back in touch with Peter at Kenwood - he's the really helpful guy I'd spoken to in the past back in January. Anyway he's looking after it all for us now. They still don't have my projector but Peter is fixing that too.

At the end of this week it will have been 3 months since I had my projector, and over 4 months since I'd had a working projector. Just so excited to be able to get back to using our home theatre and also restarting our nutrition presentations that we do weekly.

Oh totally agree. I feel very fortunate that I'm even being offered a replacement. But I still can't help feel frustrated. We use our projector for business as well as movies. We have not been able to hold any nutrition lectures for the past 3 months which we'd typically do once a week with our clients (my wife runs a nutrition, fitness, and conditioning business from our home gym).

Scott, good to hear that they're still talking about a replacement - shame it's taken a wholly unreasonable period to sort out.  Having been involved in many business acquisitions/outsourcing/insourcing, there's no excuse for a lack of business continuity, it's simply poor management.

Also good to know Kenwood are aware of this thread.  Hopefully they'll get their act together for you, as well as address concerns like a competitive (i.e. 3 year) warranty - this would help address the reservations many prospective purchasers have after a run of poor reliability in recent models.

I find it amazing that, being aware of this thread, they have continued to drag their heals - kinds reinforces how disinterested they are in attracting potential customers.
