I decided to bite the bullet and picked up the R4 Fighting Stick from Big W yesterday - $54.80
Built quality is quite good, uses the Sanwa joysticks (which I've never really liked but you wont get a home use joystick with MCA sticks unless you make it yourself) and has eight large convex buttons - with the standard Street Fighter layout as well as two other buttons convenient placed so that it can be compatible with KOF and MK3.
it has a nice clicking sound when you move the stick and the buttons feel good - alas it is a wired stick (for that price, what do you expect) and is comparible to the old Sega Saturn sticks (VF and Tekken fans will like this) and probably a level under the quality of the recent SF arcade sticks (although I except their price tag has less to do with quality and more to do with brand recognition)
Gave it a good test last night with Tekken Hybrid (which is an issue in itself - a blu-ray movie disc masquerading as a game. You have to install both games to the harddrive as it doesnt run off disc - leading me to believe these will be cheap PSN releases soon) and had no hiccups at all (except for Tekken Tag HD crashing when I finished the game....)
Get it if you are looking for a decent stick for fighting games!

I own the SF4 Tournament stick and the price tag is definitely more than just brand recognition, the build quality on that particular one is second to none – it has real weight and quality parts to it. It took some getting used to but it improved my game significantly. You also mentioned having a cord as a bad thing but most people who play fighting games prefer it because wireless ones often have issues with slight lag from time to time and you know in a fighting game that split second could be the difference between winning and losing a match, especially online.
I much prefer Street Fighter as a fighting game but it is just a bit of a shame that the stick doesn’t translate that well to the new Mortal Kombat since SF4 and its stick are designed for square gate fighting games as opposed to MK which is circle gate so I still mostly just use my regular controller for that one.

When you consider the last 4 MK games have been built for the console only (no arcade version) as opposed to SF still being an arcade release, then it makes sense that MK doesnt play well with the stick (havent tried it yet since I only got the stick yesterday)
I agree with the cord thing - but others (who arent hardcore fighting fans) will see differently
