I was just reading an article and they mentioned Samsung and Sharp as being the only LCD manufacturers left. I was surprised. I thought there were quite a few left - like maybe 5 or 6?

I know with plasma we have Panasonic and Samsung - what about LG?

So who do we have left producing all these panels???

Those names ring a bell (AUO = AU Optics?)

Isn't that who Sony are getting their entry level screens from and the higher end ones from Sharp?

I'm pretty sure TCL are making quite a few panels and video processors for other companies. They have one of the biggest manufacturing plants in China.

Panny. has taken a controlling share in IPS-Alpha,i think they bought out Hitachi,Toshiba and a Merchant Bank and intend increasing production so AFAIK they're  still going strong.I'll try and find a link.

Do they make their own or just use others' OEM glass in their chassis and electronics?

I dont think Fujitsu still make panels and I doubt the euro brands ever did.
Nothing biggest or best about any of them.

Could Panasonic be pulling out soon too?

The company also will reduce its production capacity for plasma TV panels by 48 percent.
"We've sought measures to solve deficits at the TV unit since 2008 but none brought a result that we anticipated," President Fumio Ohtsubo told reporters in Tokyo.

Panasonic, which spent more than $6 billion purchasing stakes in Sanyo and Panasonic Electric Works Co. last year, wants energy-related businesses to be its next earnings driver after its TV operation recorded three consecutive annual losses.

I notice some USA based Journo.'s claiming the landed cost of a Chinese 50" LCD  screen is less than US$80 so how can anyone compete with that and still make a profit.

And if you contact a Chinese manufacturer, and order two million  sets, you'll  more then likely get the same price.
